Receiving the Evcharist is our weekly feature where we pair choice albums with our favorite libations.  Drink from the cup of heresy.  This week’s offering: Mahr’s Antelux and North Coast Brewing Company’s Old Rasputin.  

The Metal: Mahr’s Antelux

Fallen Empire Records just dropped their first release batch of the new year, and for me that’s usually a ‘drop everything’ sort of time.  As excited as I was to check out a slew of new releases from names familiar to me, something new came along among the batch that unexpectedly blew me away: the debut offering from Mahr.  A nameless, faceless entity associated with the Prava Kollektiv, which includes lablemates Arkhtinn and Voidsphere (whose album you will recall similarly knocked my socks off), Mahr’s music is as atmospheric as their counterparts, but where other entities evoke images of a wide open cosmos, Mahr’s Antelux channels the feeling of being stuck at the most lightless parts of the ocean floor.  Combining the heaviest parts of black, death, and doom metal with ghostly keyboards and dense, reverb soaked production, Antelux is a hulking mass of an album, one that evokes at times a real sense of ominous dread in the listener.  This is music that really transports you somewhere, that grabs you and doesn’t let go, and it’s for this reason Antelux is one of my favorite albums I’ve heard so far this year.

The Booze: North Coast Brewing Company’s Old Rasputin 


Taking a similar approach to our beer as I did to my music this week, today we have something dark, heavy, and just a little bit creepy on tap.  North Coast Brewing’s Old Rasputin has long been one of my favorite stouts; I buy a four-pack whenever it’s on sale and hoard it like a miser.  Some people might find the strong bitter aspect of the drink off-putting, but in a world where some stouts can be too cloyingly chocolate-y, its nice to flip the script a little bit.  Beyond that, though, there is quite a depth to this drink, thanks to the massive amounts of malts thrown in.  Couple this with a rich body and significant ABV, and you’ve got a recipe for something even the old Russian wizard himself would approve of.
