Continuing the adjustment back to our not-MDF themed posts, it’s time for another edition of Throwback Thursday–our chance to go back in time and dig up some old gems that we find either classic, hilarious, controversial, or better yet, all of the above…
Ya know what this blog needs more of? GWAR. In honor of Dave Brockie, but also just in general. GWAR is a legendary band in so many ways. So what better time to add some more GWAR to the mix than with a throwback? So the band is decided… but what song? I mean, there are so many classics. We could go with “Sick of You,” “Saddam A Go’Go,” or even their hilarious cover of Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son.” But nope…not absurd enough. So… how about “Fuckin’ An Animal”? Let’s get weird:
Well then. What is there to really say about this? There is just so much here. The lyrical content (“Didn’t have to take her on a date/Just had to stand here on the crate”), the music, the video… it’s all… we’ll say unique. The entire video is literally our heroes in full costume chasing ‘animals’ on some hillbillies farm, tying them to trees, and then proceeding to, well, you know. And the closing line, “I’m not willing to spend anymore time on this song”, is just the icing on the cake. If you managed to get through the video of course.
Now, this particular track is off of We Kill Everything, which was released in 1999 and this video I believe in 2001. This is an album that also brought the likes of such tracks “Fishfuck” and “Penile Drip” among other gems. It’s not one of the more popular releases within the band. As far as I’m aware, they rarely played any tracks of this live aside from maybe one or two. That said, it certainly had it’s moments, albeit some of the straight comical variety like the above. But it’s still GWAR. And if you want classically controversial, where else would you turn?
Great choice, Corey. I’m going in a bit of a different direction for my #tbt, but one that’s no less hilarious. I’m not really sure what comedian/Saturday Night Live veteran Jim Breuer is doing these days (assuming still comedy/being a SNL vet), but we’re going to take you waaaaaay back to a time in which he was slightly more prominent. How far back? I’m not exactly sure. The video I’m about to share was posted to YouTube in 2010, but I remember seeing it on TV when I was in middle school, so…it goes back AT LEAST to 2002 or ’03. In any case, for this week’s Throwback Thursday, I give you: “Jim Breuer Metal Impersonations.”
From the James Hetfield-esque “YEAH! Yeah. Yeahhh”s to the Ozzy and Dio impressions, this thing is pure gold. But Breuer’s spot-on take on AC/DC steals the show. I’m not sure I have many Brian Johnson impersonations with which to compare this, but HOLY SHIT WHAT A BRIAN JOHNSON IMPERSONATION. The voice, the on-stage mannerisms, good god it’s wonderful. And he doesn’t do a bad Angus Young, either.
Jim Breuer, when he’s on, is a fucking MASTER. And he’s sure as hell on in this video. I just can’t handle it. I will fully crack up whenever this video comes on–even now, 12 or so years after my first viewing. I hope y’all enjoy it as much as I do.
Live. Love. Plow. Horns Up.
