The Horns Up Top 10: Enslaved

enslaved

With a new album dropping on March 10th, the time is ripe for a quick review of just how amazing Enslaved is. Haugesund, Norway’s finest have been plying their trade since 1991, and have been described as many, many different types of metal over the years. If you had to sum it up—and please do not do so by labeling them “viking metal”—they’re probably best described as “progressive-extreme-blackened-death-metal.” Or something like that.

Regardless, in their 24 years, they’ve released a whopping 12 LPs, three EPs, two splits (with Emperor and Satyricon, no less!) and two DVDs. That’s a monumental amount of work for a band of any genre, but even more significant is how they’ve evolved from an experimental band to a truly progressive and influential one. So without further ado, here’s a list of my personal Top 10 Enslaved songs: Continue reading

Daily ‘Bang: Dan’s Top 25 Albums of 2014 — in One List!

HornsUpTop25

So remember a week ago, when I said we’d each be listing out our Top 25 albums in a single, coherent list? (You know, to make amends for the three-a-day-on-the-blog, plus three-three-and-then-four in our three most recent episodes of the podcast approach that we ended up going with?) Welp, with the holidays coming around, that became a bit of a tall order. But fear not, a week later, here are my Top 25 albums of 2014, listed out in a normal fashion!

— TOP FOUR —

Panopticon – Roads to the North

Cretin – Stranger

Behemoth – The Satanist

Triptykon – Melana Chasmata

— REST OF THE TOP 10 (ORDERED) —

Agalloch – The Serpent and the Sphere

Pallbearer – Foundations of Burden

Allegaeon – Elements of the Infinite

Sólstafir – Ótta

Winterfylleth – The Divination of Antiquity

Tombs – Savage Gold

— REST OF THE LIST (UNORDERED) —

Thantifaxath – Sacred White Noise

Old Man Gloom – The Ape of God

Godflesh – A World Lit Only By Fire

Misery Index – The Killing Gods

Steel Panther – All You Can Eat

I’m leaving to catch a bus, so I didn’t really have time to Spotify all of these. The good news is: I’m sorry! And also, we’ve embedded these playlists before. So if you haven’t heard any of these yet, for whatever reason, look ’em up in our archives and give ’em a spin. Corey will be back with his Top 25 list later today, so keep eyes peeled. Until then!

Best of 2014 – Dan’s List, Part Seven

HornsUpTop25

Friday at last! It’s time for the final installment of the un-ordered section of my Best-of-’14 list. As we’ve made (hopefully) painfully clear over the past few days, our Final Fours (otherwise known as the yes-ordered section of my Best-of-’14 list) will be out later this afternoon in Episode 33 of the podcast. And afterwards, I’ll probably follow up with a post just listing out our Top 25s in a normal fashion. Think of it as atonement of sorts.

Anyway, enough of all that–here are the last three randomly ordered non-Final Four entries from my Top 25 of 2014:

Best of 2014 – Dan’s List, Part Six

HornsUpTop25

It’s Thursday, and by now you should know the drill. I’m doing blurbs for three more albums from my Top 25 list, presented in no particular order. This’ll happen again tomorrow morning, and then later that day, it’ll be time for our Final Fours in Episode 33 of the podcast. Those actually will be presented in a particular order, as you’ll see.

Anyway, it’s a busy one at the day job, so I’m going to keep both this intro and my blurbs short. Here are today’s entries from my Top 25:

HornsUpTop25Corey

Hello, everyone.

As you can see, we’re moving right along with our favorite listens of the past year. Hopefully you’ve been able to keep up after the first two days. It’s a lot to cover in a week (but oh, so worth it). Just a few more days until we reveal our Final Fours on the podcast. But for now, let’s keep moving through my 2014 Honorable Mentions. Today’s entries are…
