The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 163 (1.9.2020) – Alexi Laiho Tribute

playlist - mixtape

Welcome to another edition of our Saturday morning mixtape series. This week, we’re focusing on a deep dive through the music of Alexi Laiho. Children of Bodom are a band that many of us on staff recall as being our gateway towards heavier music in our formative years, myself included. In honor of Alexi’s life and legacy, here are our favorite cuts he’s been a part of.

CANTO: RIP Alexi Laiho, updates from Unflesh, Pustilence, and More

It’s a heavy day in the metal community.

  • We lost a great one today, with the news of Alexi Laiho’s passing. The former guitarist and vocalist of Children of Bodom was only 41, and the exact cause of his death is unknown at this time. It goes without saying, but our thoughts are with his family and friends. Not sure about anyone else, but the playlist is going to feature a lot of Bodom on my end this week.
  • Alright, let’s try and move on to other news from today. Pustilence have signed on with Memento Mori. The Australian death metal trio, who formed back in 2018, are preparing for their debut release some time in 2022. Something to keep our eyes on over the next year, I suppose.
  • Blackened melodic death metal crew Unflesh, featuring former members of Solium Fatalis, have announced an April 2nd release for their sophomore album, Inhumation. Check out an album teaser here, as we await a new single.
  • And we’ll close with something a little lighter. Here’s a new video from Burn Down Eden for “The Five Horseman”, which should hopefully help things end on a more amusing note. Enjoy.

CANTO: Green Carnation, Bodom After Midnight, Krater, and More

green carnation

These weird times are only getting weirder.

  • Green Carnation has announced that the album release show for Leaves of Yesteryear will be streamed for all to see on May 23rd. No audience members will be present, and yes, that is a result of the current pandemic.
  • What was once Children of Bodom, is now Bodom After Midnight. Yes, the new project from Alexi Laiho and Daniel Freyberg is a CoB spin-off in name. I get it, legally the name had to change and this allows them to maintain branding. I’ll be looking toward to hearing new material, out of curiosity as much as anything.
  • What’s happening in Italy right now is beyond belief. That being said, I have fully enjoyed seeing clips of residents singing from their patios. Even better than that? This dude jamming Slayer’s “Raining Blood.”
  • German black metal crew Krater have dropped a new music video for “Prayer for Demise”. That track was taken from 2019’s Venenare (Eisenwald). So if you want to close with something dark and grim, you sure got it.
