As Santa preps his brood for the impending travels, the new release lists will be shorter and shorter as we near the last week of 2022. Now, that doesn’t mean quality will suffer per se, but we shall see. Moving on, who hasn’t caught the new single from Metallica yet? Good lord go do that now if you haven’t. Maaaan, if you missed that sneak attack from Gatecreeper last week, GO FIX THAT. Exactly what I needed and they do a thing at the end that was a shocking, but excellent, surprise of a thing. Anyway, get it. This week brings us new death metal jams from Asphyx, ecclectic-doomy-bluesy-riffy-psychedelicy tunes from Here Lies Man, and a balls out two track banger from Sumeru. Beyond that, we’ve got a lengthy list to peruse that has a little something for everyone. It seems a lot of metal bands these days enjoy playing with subgenres and creating hybrid sounds. I love the creativity of these groups and their courage to explore the space and make something unique. Australia’s Empress is one of those experimental bands and their latest release, Wait ‘Til Night, is an alluring combination of shoegaze, doom, indie, post-metal, and black metal. This album is dark yet delicate, haunting, and dreamy. The band’s signature sound is fine tuned in this, their sophomore album.
