The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 64 (01.26.2019)

playlist - mixtape

We’re going to keep things short and sweet today.  Normally I’d be more wordy in these things, but I’m dead tired today.  Last night (as of this writing) I caught the LA date of the Primitive Man & Ulthar mini-tour.  It was an insanely cool show; it was my first time seeing Ulthar and they did not disappoint in the slightest, and the songs from Primitive Man’s upcoming split with Hell (more on that from yours truly later on down the line) sound uglier and more heavy than getting an anvil dropped on your face.  Local support from grind/powerviolence crew Whelm and doomy death metal purveyors Teeth rounded out the night in fine form.  All in all a great night, but getting home later than my Old Man Body can handle on a weeknight isn’t doing me any favors today.

Maybe that wasn’t as short as I had expected.  Oh well.  Time to let the music speak for itself.  Catch you next time.

Welcome back and happy Saturday everyone.  Another week behind us, and I’m happy to see the other side of this one.  I planned on spending this last week catching up with work after being away on vacation but it turns out that my mother gave me one last Christmas present: the goddamn plague.  So this week has been mostly me, already sick, taking care of my partner, who got hit much harder than me with whatever bug we got passed to us.  All my downtime did give me plenty of space to explore a ton of music though, both old and new.  I’ve got some really exciting promos in my inbox that are making me happy, but I’ve also been catching up on late 2018 releases I’ve been missing, like a ton of releases from Sentient Ruin that I unfortunately slept on.  Let me know what else I should have listened to in the comments.  That’s what the internet is for, right?

I’m baaaaaaaack.  Thanks to Josh for covering for me while I was away.  I spent a great two weeks back in the icy winter of my home, Chicago, IL.  I got to spend the holidays with all my family, catch up with some old friends from high school and college, eat and drink myself into oblivion, and watch my California-Born-and-Raised partner’s face light up when some unexpected snow flurries blew in.  It was exactly the kind of recharge I needed after the trash fire that was 2018.  I feel ready to get back in the saddle again, and what better way to do that than share all the good stuff I and my cohorts have been jamming over our respective holiday-time adventures?  Check below for a list of tunes to whip your year into shape.

January saw a TON of killer releases. In fact, early 2016 has me believing that this year might be the best overall year for metal releases that we have seen in some time. So today I decided to take a look back at January and mention nine releases that you may have missed but should absolutely take the time to get to know better. This should be a monthly piece moving forward. Each month I will recap nine releases from the prior month that were well wroth checking out. Obviously this list isn’t conclusive and it might not always just be THE BEST music. If it was merely the best music released Chthe’ilist’s debut Le Dernier Crépuscule would be above and away the #1. The idea is to present music that flew somewhat under the radar in relation to how simply great it is.  Continue reading
