The end of March always seems to find me on the road to some far-off destination and folks, this year is no exception. When you are reading this, I will be leaving a night of camping in Northern California and will be on my way up to Portland, OR, one of my favorite places on Earth, followed by a few days in Seattle. I am ridiculously excited to spend some quality time with my family and my partner away from the nightmare hell world that is work. And if you need to spend some quality time away from the cares of the world too, why not dip into this week’s playlist? We made it just for you. It’d be rude of you not to.
I had a plan in January. The same plan I have every January: to only document the albums that strike a major chord in one way or another. Yet, here we sit in December and I’m debating on at least one or two of my locked list and mourning those who fell off. Don’t take ‘fell off’ as a knock either. Fall is teasing us with slightly cooler nights and 2018 is not getting any weaker on the back end for metal releases. The hits just keep coming: The Ocean recently announced Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic for a November street date FINALLY, and Evoken will serve up Hypnagogia in that same month. We will also see albums from Hate Eternal, Voivod, Sumac, Megaton Leviathan and so many more before this year is done, all of it excites me to no end. Fall has the same effect; Halloween and horror movies and fires…yessss. I’ve gotten all out of sorts here as you can clearly see but you came to check out what we’ve been listening to over the past two weeks so let’s get to it. Subscribe to our YouTube channel here and head immediately below for a Saturday filled with all the good stuff…
Blackened deathgrind. I know ‘blackened’ has been used to death but in all seriousness one listen to this North/South Carolinian trio’s debut EP, Forage the Ash, and it just feels sooooo right. Morgue Walker nail that part but also make good on their namesake by actually sounding like they recorded this thing inside a morgue adjacent to a coffin awaiting the hearse. If you took that as a knock, it only slightly is. And by slight I mean miniscule. Anyway, this is blackened deathgrind and it is vicious. Continue reading
