Not ones to shy away from a challenge, melodic death metallers Insomnium traverse a single 40 minute track on their seventh full length Winter’s Gate. But before there’s any dismissal purely based on length, this is an album full of emotion and beautifully tumultuous atmosphere that goes by in the blink of an eye. Not lost in the shuffle, however, is the band’s top shelf melodic death metal. Here, they are just as proficient with black metal influences and progressive song writing as well. It’s a sprawling epic, but one well worth investing the time to experience. Continue reading
Finland’s Insomnium began their melodic death metal journey in 1997, have six full length albums to date and later this week will release their seventh, Winter’s Gate. It greatly expands on the quality we’ve come to expect from the band’s work but is also a very sincere effort. Winter’s Gate marks a departure of sorts from the standard album template and goes all in with one 40 minute track. It feels like I was just talking about an Insomnium tour only a few short months ago. Oh, wait…I was. You know the Finnish melodic death metal crew have earned themselves a special place among my favorites when I’ve seen them twice in a calendar year. The first time around, they opened for Dark Tranquillity at the Worcester Palladium, back in January. This time, they headlined an incredible performance with support from the very-closely-related Omnium Gatherum at the same venue. Yes, that’s right. I’ve seen Insomnium twice in barely eight months at the same damn venue. And you know what? If they were right back there tonight…I’d be there for a third. Let’s go over some highlights from last night.
