CANTO: Overkill, Imonolith, Cannibal Corpse, and More

It’s a Friday. And it’s going to be a long weekend. Hurray.

  • Overkill have released a lyric video for the second single from their upcoming new album, The Wings Of War. The track is called “Head Of A Pin”. The album will be the group’s 19th and is set to drop on February 22nd.
  • Hey! Another new single! This one is from Imonolith and it’s called “Hollow”. This project features former Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, and Devin Townsend Project members… and honestly I didn’t expect it to sound like this. Interesting.
  • Cannibal Corpse have tapped Erik Rutan to fill in on guitars for Pat O’Brien for the next round of tours. While O’Brien deals with some personal stuff, you can catch Rutan on the Decibel Magazine Tour and the next US leg of Slayer’s farewell tour.
  • Let’s round this day off with some Finnish thrash. This is the new video from Carnal Forge for “Bound In Flames”. Their new album, Gun to mouth salvation will be out next week.

The Nine Circles ov… Strapping Young Lad

strappingyounglad

Let’s give it up for The Lad! Obviously, you are all aware of how much we talk about Devin Townsend on this blog. He’s one of our favorites out there, so we tend to cover him on a regular basis. That said, what we don’t revisit nearly enough is the Devin Townsend- fronted Strapping Young Lad. I am fully aware that this project came to an end almost a full decade ago, but even today it’s still a project worth revisiting from time to time. And that’s basically all it took to bring us here. So let’s take a look at some of my personal favorites from SYL. Continue reading

Retrospective: Strapping Young Lad – “Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing”

263786g

Ya know, when you dig into early works of Strapping Young Lad, you start to realize just how ridiculous the career the career of Devin Townsend has been. Of course, we all love his newer work, specifically everything released as The Devin Townsend Project, and we have discussed such content at length here and on The Nine Circles Podcast, including more of that later today (spoiler alert). But what we don’t revisit quite enough, at least in my eyes, is the project that kick-started his solo career… Strapping Young Lad. And the album that started that particular era is none other than Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing. (Side note: Also one of the best album names of all time.)   Continue reading

Daily ‘Bang – Check out the debut “Have You Found Metal?” playlist!

Listened to Episode 16 yet? If not, get on it. If yes, this post’s for you. As you may recall, we debuted a new segment called “Have You Found Metal?” and tried to convert my good friend Kevin Brown to the cause of all things heavy and br00tal. (Did it work? Not entirely, but he was a good sport about it.)

But now’s your chance to try the same experiment on your friends! Below is the very same playlist we created for Kevin in this week’s segment. Try it out and see if you can get any other outsiders to raise their horns!

As we do further editions of HYFM?, we’ll obviously be changing the playlists around and uploading any subsequent entries as they come. But for now, enjoy the first one, and get out there to do your metallic duty!
