Here we are, again, with Initial Descent and why so soon you ask? Well, Initial means “existing or occurring at the beginning” and since we don’t have too many Sunday posts today is the beginning. Hence, “Initial Descent” and Saturday just ain’t it anymore. Feel strongly one way or the other? PLEASE, leave it in the comments and tell us how you feel and what you like or dislike.

Moving along, this week we have NY’s extreme avant-garde black / death metallers Imperial Triumphant triumphantly return (yep, I did that) with their third full length Vile Luxury, Churchburn are back with their doom laden second full length None Shall Live…The Hymns of Misery, Seattle’s duo Pound offer up their debut Pound which will make heads spin from the dazzling display of technical virtuosity and Deafheaven come gazing back to explode the internet on Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. 1..2..3.. has it started yet? No worries, it will.

Profile: New York’s Dark and Challenging Metallers Imperial Triumphant

Happy 4th everyone. Initially, there was a thought of holding this until after the holiday but listening to and experiencing Imperial Triumphant is equivalent to the most dazzling fireworks display ever. So, we rolled with it. The band will be releasing their newest sonic adventure, Vile Luxury, next week via Gilead Media in the US and Throatruiner in Europe. Experiencing Vile Luxury is somewhere along the lines of rolling up to a late night 60s style jazz club and witnessing a collaboration with your favorite black / death metal band. Only, this black / death metal band just happens to be one of the best examples of what avant-garde, progressive, and downright visionary really means. It’s carefully controlled chaos that shines a dark light on their theme of society’s — particularly their own home turf — downfall and through the use of extremely packed song structures they carve a bleak picture yet keep listeners returning for more since there’s simply no way to dissect this beast on one or even ten listens. Even more than that, Vile Luxury is the most cohesive effort from the band to date. Yes, true statement.

I could go on and on but I’m calling it there. Keep an eye out for a full review in the coming days. Until then, we recently had the chance to ask Kenny Grohowski (drums) and Zachary Ilya Ezrin (guitars, vocals) our set of Profile questions to dig a little deeper into the band. Initial Descent: March 12 – 18, 2017

I’m not going to ramble on this week because not only do we have some stellar music for you in the top four slots but we have plenty more in store beyond that. Oh and I’m heading out to the Atlanta Decibel Tour in a few short hours so expect some words on that in the coming days, should be epic. Stay tuned. Up first is Woe‘s incendiary Hope Attrition that basks in its ability to see the current state of affairs as they really are and calls for action instead of complacency, vicious black metal with a message. Next up, Fange return with their second full length Pourrissoir and somehow they’ve managed to retain all the nasty sludge qualities that made their debut so amazing but here they hone their song craft to a sharpened tip of extremity. Third up is legendary US death metallers Obituary with their tenth full length Obituary, and yes the band still has it after all these years and yes it will be a treat to see these guys tonight (had to throw that in there). Last but not least is Saille with their melodic yet epic black metal on Gnosis and if you’ve yet to experience this band now is as good a time as any, you won’t be disappointed. Initial Descent: October 23 – 29, 2016

Alright so, Monday is Halloween and surely by now you have your costume in order? In the midst of a horror movie marathon? Burning a skull candle? If not, why and my god what are you doing?! Anyway, it’s Initial Descent time which means more outstanding metal releases for your ears, souls, and minds. This week we’ve got the debut full length, Louring, from Jagged Mouth and honestly these guys rip a canyon in vile doom metal, highly recommended. Speaking of highly recommended, King Dude treats us to another top shelf album of satanic and dark americana with Sex, the always loud Whores kill it, as usual, on Gold, Ulcerate don’t deviate from their crushing and technical death metal on Shrines of Paralysis, Urfaust continue their mind bending exploration on Empty Space Meditation but do it with a bigger dose of black metal than we’ve come accustomed to recently, and Vermin Womb stay true to their despicable (in a good way) death metal selves on Decline. Album Review: Fange – “Purge”

Fange - Purge

On debut full length Purge, France’s Fange offer up a downtuned platter of songs that pass up the jugular in favor of reaching in and destroying the soul. Instead of going strictly by the rules of doom or sludge, Fange favors a path similar to the likes of Primitive Man and Indian, a sort of death, doom, sludge hybrid. Any light available when pressing the play button is very swiftly and effectively extinguished and violently so at that. Dark, dank and devoid of any kind of emotion, Purge is an outstanding example of a band that lives to be as abrasive as possible. Continue reading →
