CANTO: Ashbringer, Ascended Dead, Elder Devil, and More

This is going to be a murderous week and I am already exhausted by it.

Opening with some atmospheric black metal on this gloomy day feels right. Check out the new stuff from Ashbringer, “Rain”, over at Invisible Oranges. They’ve signed on to Translation Loss, so we’ll keep eyes out for a new album announcement sometime soon as well.
How about a couple of tours? Wormhole are hitting North America with Analepsy, Cognitive, and Necroticgorebeast this coming July and early August. Here’s the full schedule with ticket links.
And then we have Ascended Dead. The West Coast Apocalypse tour includes a handful of dates in June, alongside Coscradh. They’ll be supporting Evenfall Of The Apocalypse, which is approaching its May 12 release through 20 Buck Spin.
False Fed, a new project formed by members of Ministry, Amebix, Nausea, Discharge, and more have signed with Neurot Recordings. We can expect their debut later this year, titled Let Them Eat Fake.
Let’s close with some grind. Elder Devil dropped a video for “My Body Is An Earthen Shrine”, which you can check out below. Their sophomore album, Everything Worth Loving, is out on June 16 through Prosthetic Records.

Album Review: Analepsy — “Quiescence”

Space. The final frontier. That’s what they say, but Portugal’s Analepsy kickstarted their career with an album that told of mass destruction of the solar system’s inhabitants and on Quiescence, the cosmos is empty and awaiting its demise. So it would seem that ‘final’ is a loose term and that more stories are yet to be told. Later discussion, to be sure. One thing is for certain, in the here and now, Analepsy’s brand of slamming brutal death metal is not your typical paint by numbers fare as they weave classic strains of death metal with more current sounding melodic yet brutal flair. And if the subject matter is on the grand scope of crushing the cosmos, it better be something to match that scale.

Initial Descent: April 10 – 16, 2022

Feel free to feel how you want about this statement, but I’m just over here basking in the glory of the metal 2022 has brought us thus far and several you don’t even know about yet that will knock the socks clean off your crusty feet. Speaking of new metal, we’ve got a full listing and a few of these are at the level of ‘knocking socks off’ so let’s get to it… Kicking things off are a couple of top tier brutal death metal entries from Analepsy and Atoll which have my full attention. Then, we’ve got another MASSIVE doom outing from Seer, a progressive and slightly technical outing from Monuments, and a bloated list of other records worthy of your time and hard earned dollars. Just keep some of that change for new socks, eh?!

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 225 (4.02.2022)

We’re back, and it feels like Spring is really starting to take a hold. I’ve been re-organizing my vinyl collection the past few days, figuring out just where the hell everything is going to fit and how I’m going to explain to my wife why I need to take over another room before the next stack arrives. First world problems to be sure, but that doesn’t mean I can’t use it to kick off the 225th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, you know?

We’re gonna kick things off with some of the surprises I’ve discovered the last week, starting with new music from Michael Romeo, who brings the heavy prog I crave from Symphony X on his new solo joint. Anton ups the tech factor with some ripping new Inanimate Existence and follows it up with Luminous Vault and Lustmord collaborating with The Ocean. Josh digs into the dank earth of death metal to give light to Analepsy, Visceral Explosion, and Flesh Configuration before shaking things up a bit with Downcross and Real Steel. Vincent goes wide as usual with the newest single from Devil Master, Tzompantli, Falls of Rauros and deep cut from the Pieces of April soundtrack by Stephin Merrit. Hera returns to the playlist and brings Ibaraki, Ghost, Terzij de Horde, Playgrounded, Sadist, and something I’m assuming is called You May Kiss the Bride? I don’t know..it’s heavy though! Next up is Angela bringing some long awaited new music from Meshuggah as well as Frayle, Amenra, and Bhleg. Once again bringing up rear guard is Buke, and he’s chock full of great stuff, from the new Haunt single to some real old classic Opeth, Morbid Angel, Ripping Corpse, Autopsy, and finally some truly classic prog in the way of the might Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 220 (2.26.2022)

Say goodbye, February. I wish I could say goodbye to the panic, the anxiety, and the fear as well, but tyrants are gonna tyrant, I guess. At least there’s music to keep us from falling over the brink, so let’s just jump into the 220th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, and do what we can to stay informed, stay sane, and make what small differences we can to make this planet better for everyone.

I’m framing the playlist out with some Scatterbrain, because that describes my mental state at the moment and quite frankly it’s the music I needed to lighten the mood up. Anton brings in Ernia, Mass Worship, and Playgrounded. Josh mixes it up with Analepsy, Atoll, Black Flag and some vintage Dokken, among others. Vincent continues falling for Mitski and toe, but also rages with Worm and the new Falls of Rauros. Angela features the latest from Messa, Celeste, and Trna as well as a banger from Oathbreaker. And Buke? Buke goes with the latest from Spirit Adrift and Evil Invaders, but then hits the wayback button for some Candlemass, Dark Angel, Mercyful Fate, and Megadeth.
