Folks, it’s Saturday. The day that felt like it’d never come. But alas and long week be damned it’s time for whatever it is you do when you’re not paying the bills. And of course we’re here to help soundtrack the whole thing with another loaded playlist of the things we’ve been jamming this week. We’ve got tons of death metal, some hardcore..ish sludge, a little bit of black metal, a lot of stuff in between, and we close the whole thing down with a tribute to Des Kensel who just announced his departure from High On Fire, sad news. CANTO: Belus, Dimmu Borgir, Avenged Sevenfold, and More!

1/25/2018. It’s cold. Like my heart.

Belus has announced a brief run of shows in March and April. Their last album, Apophenia, was solid, so check one of these dates out if you can.
Dimmu Borgir is finally getting us something new! Eonian will be out May 4th and we get to hear a new track as early as February 23rd. There’s some new members too, obviously. So, figure out the rest of the details on your own.
Avenged Sevenfold have announced that they will be skipping the Grammys apparently in protest because the category of “Best Rock Song” won’t be televised. Ignoring the Grammys… huh, A7X and I have something in common…
Here’s a new lyric video for a song called “Volatile” by a band called Machine Head. You may have heard of them. Have fun.

Hello there, online metal community. How you holding up? List fatigue setting in yet? If so sorry: this is in no way going to help. My first year writing for Nine Circles resulted in listening to over 500 albums – I won’t even begin to pretend they all got a fair shake, but they all got at least one listen. The sheer glut of music that passed through my ears was like an awakening, helping me to better understand what it was music did for me, what I needed it to do for me. I found albums that mesmerized on first listen only to fade quickly, and albums I initially dismissed only to find their hooks in me months later, and it’s these surprise revelations that keep me listening, keep me writing, and keep me so engaged with this beast we call metal.

You’d think doing a Top 25 would be sufficient to cover all the bases, but it feels like it doesn’t even make a dent into the great music that sustained me over the course of the year. And so, if you’ll indulge me, here’s an extra 15 albums that warrant honorable mention. Think of them as #26-40 (hey, if Decibel can do it…), in any order you like, though they’re alphabetical below.
