Fall is officially upon us and October will begin tomorrow. Who’s excited? ME. And you, of course. No surprise there and no surprise either that many of you are still reeling from the new Opeth album that dropped last week. Well, guess what? We’ve got another list of new stuff for you to get lost in and argue over. All killer, no filler. GO…

Exhumed kick off the witching season with their ninth album and it’s a freaking beast with punishing body blows and feral fangs that rip and tear. Seriously, it’s been quite some time since they’ve sounded this vicious so go and do that, pronto. Another thing to add to the “do now” list is the eighth effort from Insomnium, just when you think a band couldn’t get any better, they do, and they did. Likewise for Ripper’s newest 20 minutes of mind melting thrash – anyone remember how devastating Experiment of Existence was? This one multiplies it many times over. Last up top is Obsidian Tongue’s first utterance in six years and it’s their most affecting and astounding work of black/atmospheric/post/gaze metal to date. Knowing their discography, I’m even shocked I just wrote that, just trust me here. So really, these top slots are all can’t miss albums and start yet another STRONG week. But, there’s so much more and it’s a smorgasbord of gory delights. Continue reading

Lecherous Nocturne
Lecherous Nocturne

Had some much needed downtime this week and, as you might guess, it was grand. Coming home with a full weekend ahead of me just sweetens the pot. And particularly when this week’s new releases are not only exceptional but plentifully so. No more waiting, here we go — Twenty one year death metal vets Lecherous Nocturne are back with their most vicious and darkest album yet, Occultaclysmic and honestly this is the best thing they’ve done since The Age of Miracles Has Passed. Mesarthim seemingly came out of nowhere with The Density Parameter but no surprise here, their blend of cosmic black metal with a heavy dose of atmospherics is amazing. Black Salvation give a class on how to properly vibe on the 70s psych hard rock era while staying fresh and exciting on Uncertainty Is Bliss and if you thought the week couldn’t get any better, Panopticon return with The Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness (I and II) and it’s all I had hoped for and so much more — atmospheric black metal meets folk and americana and I’m head over heels with this thing after test driving it on a long mountain hike. Fantastic start to the week already but there’s a ton more to get into so have a seat and ENJOY. Continue reading

moonsorrow band 2016

Happy Friday, kids! Q1 is officially over, and I’ve decided I hate metal.

…kidding. Because it’s April 1. Duh. But either way, we’ve got a sneaky busy week for new metal albums. Nowhere near as crazy as last week — how could it be??? — but still a nice mess of things to listen to. Moonsorrow, Graves at Sea… hell, even Babymetal has some new stuff out today, if that’s your thing. So let’s jump on in. Here’s what’s on tap for Friday, April 1:
