Album Review: October Falls — “A Fall of an Epoch”

There once was a band from Helsinki… I don’t have a limerick to tell but, now that I’ve got your attention let’s talk about Finnish black/folk band October Falls and their new release, A Fall of an Epoch.  The band’s signature sound, described as “nature-oriented black metal,” is perfectly crafted here.  This is a black metal album with folky, atmospheric interludes offering moments of peace and solitude between killer riffs and Mikko Lehto’s howling vocals.  The perfect balance between the two musical styles makes for a beautiful and provoking album. Album Review: Duende en la Penumbra — “That Same Evergreen I Love So Well, Despite the Way Its Shadows Make Me Sad”

Blast beats to melancholy drumming, tremolo picking to soft folk guitar—top it off with poetic lyrics in different languages growled, sung, and spoken, wrap it all up in a beautifully illustrated package and you get That Same Evergreen I Love So Well, Despite the Way Its Shadows Make Me Sad.  The talented NYC duo Duende en la Penumbra brings plenty to the table in this debut album.  Their unique blend of genres (black metal, folk, progressive metal, electronic, to name a few) and blend of languages (English, French, Spanish) create something intriguing and ever-changing. Interview: Aaron of Falls of Rauros on “Vigilance Perennial,” Sonic Construction, and Musical Identity

For over a decade Falls of Rauros have taken the folk/black metal template and subtly expanded its scope to encompass a number of musical styles all while maintaining a singular vision. New album Vigilance Perennial feels like the culmination of this musical exploration: a deep, layered tapestry of melody and aggression that isn’t afraid to rely on the strength of its quieter moments to complement the harsher passages. Nine Circles took the time to talk with founding member Aaron Charles about the band’s history, approach to writing, as well as where and how they fit into the black/folk metal tag.
