The Horns Up Top 10: Type O Negative

For this week’s Top 10, I’ve chosen to write about one of my all-time favorite bands: Type O Negative. “Type O” is well known for late frontman Peter Steele, a strapping, six-foot six-inch human being who once posed fully-erect in Playgirl. (I shared this fact with my friend Paul who quickly quipped, “Bro, Peter Steele is always fully erect. His blood and semen is the formula for Viagra.”) Always in the public eye, Peter Steele was also a guest on the Jerry Springer Show where he spoke about his interactions with groupies.

Lost in those stories is the fact that Type O Negative is arguably the greatest gothic metal band of all time—a band that could be from no other place than New York City, and a band that was full of humor and the uncanny ability to poke fun at the very thing their music claimed to hold so dear. Retrospective: Type O Negative’s ‘Bloody Kisses’

Welcome to midweek, everyone. Now, as you are all aware at this point, in every episode of the Horns Up Podcast, Dan and I like to take a moment to pay homage to a critical album in our libraries that we had revisited in the previous week. Going forward, that reflection will now be shared on The Horns Up Blog. This will save us time in the podcast and hopefully allow you all to get through the damn thing each week without losing interest.

So, now that we’ve covered the briefing, we can continue with the real content. This week’s retrospective in none other than:

Type O Negative’s Bloody Kisses

Type O’s third release came out way in August of 1993 and ended up being their final album with all original members. What’s kinda cool about it is the fact that it was the first album on Roadrunner to reach platinum sales certification. A platinum record…not a term that gets tossed around all that frequently anymore.

But enough of the generic facts. This album is a must-have (or at least must-listen). It would certainly fall into the gothic/doom category but Peter Steele brings out so much more than that on this album. We know the classics like ‘Christian Woman’ and ‘Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)’ which I guess you could say fall into that doom-y, despair-driven, sound. But what gets me on this album is how they mix it up in ‘Kill All The White People’ and ‘We Hate Everyone’. These tracks completely change the tempo and stylistic theme of the album. Oh, and ‘Set Me On Fire’ may as well be garage rock from 50 years ago. Seriously, they do so much on this album and Peter Steele’s voice is just perfect for it.

Some back story: Aside from a few tracks here and there and hearing the current members in A Pale Horse Named Death (who also kicks ass), I didn’t have a ton of Type O in my musical spectrum. Well, until Wacken 2014, that is. Now, each night at the festival, a movie would show on the infield before the first main stage infield opened up. Each of these movies contained footage from past Wacken performances–for example, I watched Dio’s set from 2004 my first night there. On the third night, my friends from Trinidad that I had met on the Metal Train encouraged me to join them for the screening of Type O’s 2007 performance. Needless to say, I was extremely intrigued and made a mental note that I absolutely needed to own Bloody Kisses after seeing three tracks from the album in this performance. It was amazing. Just one more good thing Wacken has brought to my life. Sigh.

Anyway, here’s the album. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen. You won’t be sorry. It’s quite an experience.
