Boy it sure is doomy out here, huh? I normally don’t push myself like this, but even though I already had an album, and a doom album at that, picked this week, I saw Convocation’s new one on our list and I knew I couldn’t let it get away from me. Ashes Coalesce originally came recommended to me courtesy of the esteemed John Darnielle, professional mountain goat and death-doom scholar, and as soon as I saw that gleaming stamp of approval on “The Absence of Grief,” I was instantly sold. As of last week, Deicide’s self titled album turned 30 years old. I look back on it like it was yesterday as that album was the one that really pushed me headfirst into death metal. Sure, I had dabbled in the tape trading circles but nothing I had heard to that point really grabbed me like “Lunatic of God’s Creation” or the pummeling of “Dead By Dawn.” Stone cold classic. Anyway, there’s no way to know which album off of these new release lists we’ll be looking back on with the same admiration but damn if it ain’t fun searching. About that search; this week brings us a sick manifestation of blackened death metal from Myrkridia, a soul crushing epic of death/doom from Convocation, and a tumultuous amalgamation of black metal, doom and noise from Swarming. And, as always, so much more below. Seek and enjoy. Continue reading
We had this playlist all sorted until Enslaved dropped “Homebound” and now we’ve got a new lead off video. If this is any indication of what to expect from their next album, we are in for a treat, folks. A TREAT, I tell you. We’ve got that, some new Couch Slut, a new one from Ulcerate and Triptykon, Sorcerer and Binary Code, and Zyklonius closes things out in epic fashion with a 24 minute Fleshvessel pick. All that and much more awaits directly below. Making your Saturday better is our goal so we hope you’ll enjoy. Missing brother Vince? No worries, he’s off saving the world but he’ll be back in short order. Kick back, pop a top or fresh crack a bourbon, and enjoy some tunes. See you here again soon.
