Get ready folks…more sax-infused metal coming your way whether you want it or not. Some folks are sick of it, some folks love it…either way, you’re probably not going to be able to escape it. Just recently I’ve had the skronk of a reed instrument accompanying the likes of the latest from Imperial Triumphant (featuring Kenny G no less), a massive opener from the forthcoming White Ward album, and hot off the presses the new single from staff favorites KEN mode which absolutely slays. In other words, just another day for the 235th Nine Circles Playlist.

Elsewhere the 9C crew leave the orchestra instruments behind for some gnarled metal. Josh whips up a frenzy with new tracks from Hammer King, Inhuman Condition, Soreption, and some classic Slayer. Anton ups there ante with Aara, Panzerfaust, and High Castle Teleorkestra. Ian only brings one track to the playlist this week but it’s a whopper…if you’ve never heard the theme song from Home Improvement masked with the vocals of David Lee Roth, well…I welcome you to the insanity of Neil Cicierega. After mellowing things out a bit with some Elliot Smith, Vincent hits us with some Lantlôs and The Black Atlantic. Finally Angela closes the list with new music from Wake, recent Dopelord and Windhand.

Hard to believe it’s been nearly a year since I did one of these. This probably matters to no one, but that’s a long time and I miss the mini-review format. So, I’m sitting here having the first drink of the evening and I want to tip this glass back many times, listen to metal, and say some stuff about it. And, all of it will be pulled from the current crop of incoming releases. The deeper in I get, my glass will go from full to empty at least a couple, or three, times so results may vary. Initial Descent: February 14 – 20, 2021

Did you shower your Valentine with all the good stuff yesterday? Call your mom? How about gift some grindcore or doom or death metal? No? WTF! If the answer was no to any of those, literally no one cares so you’re good. Anyway, new week means new metal and we’ve got plenty of it, so maybe a late gift?….haha. Kidding. Kicking things off in play low and play slow style are the Polish quartet Dopelord with a smokin’ new EP—see what I did there—that really has me in its grasp, next up is a bone cruncher of blackened-deathgrind from Gravesend, following that is a proggy death metal come psychedelic ambient number from The Lylat Continuum, and last up top is Harakiri For The Sky with their new full length that weaves post-everything and a pinch of black and folk metal—it hasn’t tripped my trigger yet, but maybe your mileage will be better. We’ve got all that and a ton more, so get to digging.

CANTO: Cannibal Corpse, Culted, Mare Cognitum, and More

It’s not like there wasn’t any news yesterday, it was more that I didn’t feel like sharing it.

Let’s start with Cannibal Corpse, because updates from them are always fun. Violence Unimagined, their 15th studio album, drops on April 16th through Metal Blade Records. A new single taken from that record, “Inhumane Harvest”, is available for your listening pleasure now.
My favorite news for today, however, comes from I, Voidhanger Records, who announced the release date for the next Mare Cognitum album. Solar Paroxysm drops on March 19th, so snag your pre-order here. Check out a new track over at Invisible Oranges, as well.
Polish stoner doom act Dopelord is dropping a new EP on February 19th titled Reality Dagger. That will be released through Green Plague Records. I tried to find a pre-order link for everyone, but then laziness set in and I moved on.
We’ll wrap up with new music video from Culted for “Maze”, which you can check out below. That’s another sample from Nous, which is out on February 26th through Season of Mist. Here’s that crucial pre-order link, that I did manage to find, as well.
