Receiving the Evcharist: Emperor and The Seeker

Receiving the Evcharist

You idiots miss me? There’s no doubt that I’ve scaled back the contributions to this blog (it’s a life thing), but my contributions to this particular post will still emerge fairly regularly. While I don’t actually care what any of you think (see: the dissolution of my Twitter account), I still enjoy talking and writing about booze and metal. Audience optional. And that brings us here, where I am dabbling in something a little different for me (wine) and something familiar (black metal). So, without further delay… The Metal: Emperor’s Anthems to the Welkin at DuskThe Booze: The Seeker Cabernet Sauvignon. Continue reading

Receiving the Evcharist: Agalloch and Moat Mountain Brewing Company

Receiving the Evcharist

I’ve come up with some crazy combinations of metal and beer over the last several weeks, and this week is going to be no different. At least on the surface. But there is a definitive connection between the two items I’m consuming this evening, something I’ll be getting into shortly. The styles may clash, but there is an overlapping inspiration. Well, for me. And as usual, that’s all that matters. I have things to do (no I don’t), so I’m going to kill the intro here. The Metal: Agalloch – Marrow of the Spirit. The Booze: Moat Mountain Brewing Company’s Miss V’s BlueberryContinue reading

Receiving the Evcharist: Pelican and Finch’s Beer Co.

Receiving the Evcharist

So I’ll admit that my timing with the Chicago beer is a little curious. I suppose I was only in that city two weeks ago, but it would have made more sense to run this little number last week. Regardless, I decided to follow last week’s trend and spin (literally) a more recent record (literally) this Thursday evening. And by evening I mean basically Friday morning… it just about to strike midnight. I know, I know, my game has been weak this… week. But life changes frequently and sometimes you gotta go with the flow. More on that front in a couple weeks when I run my column. For now, let’s focus on what really matters. The Metal: Pelican – The Cliff. The Booze: Finch’s Beer Company Hardcore Chimera. Continue reading

Receiving the Evcharist: Ghost Bath and Pabst

Receiving the Evcharist

After taking a week off for Chicago Open Air happenings, I decided to return this week with a bit of a curious choice. Spoiler alert: The curious choice is not the album. More on that later. I’ve spent much of the past couple of weeks revisiting some notable albums from the last couple of years. Naturally, I find myself falling father and father behind the new releases dropping each week. But that’s something a rainy day can fix quickly, so it’s a justifiable situation as far as I’m concerned. So, this week I decided to feature one of my favorite albums from last year (even if it didn’t make my EOY list) and supplement it with… well, nothing special. The Metal: Ghost Bath – Moonlover. The Booze: Pabst Old Tankard Ale. Continue reading

Receiving the Evcharist: Hypocrisy and Smoky Quartz

Receiving the EvcharistAfter the last few weeks of sipping summer beers and listening to ‘lighter’ metal, I’ve decided to pull a u-turn and get aggressive this week. I’ve been flying non-stop all week due to some extensive projects outside this blog and I’m more of less relaying on everything to keep my energy up (and my aggression up). So, with that in mind, I’ve decided to couple the legendary — yet often neglected — Swedish death metal outfit known as Hypocrisy with a small scale distillery in the local area called Smoky Quartz. So I guess it’s time for that introductory thing I do. The Metal: Hypocrisy:  A Taste Of Extreme Divinity. The Booze: Smoky Quartz Distillery’s Bourbon Whiskey. Continue reading
