Best of 2016, Q2: Josh Thieler’s List
2016 has been an incredible year for music. So much came out in the first quarter that I never could narrow it down enough to name any favorites. For this second quarter, I was determined to compile this list if it killed me. There probably would be more on this list, but a lot of records came out in the final week of June that I will probably sneak into my Q3 list. Through much internal wrestling, tears, and over 1,000 hours of listening to new records, I have finally been able to come up with my list of favorites for 2nd quarter 2016. Continue reading
Nine Circles Ov… April 2016
April was another insane month in what is fast becoming the greatest year in death metal in recent history. Some stellar releases include, Ihsahn, a debut LP from Nucleus, an LP from Moonsorrow, an absolute fire-breathing ripper from Swedish D-Beat legends Victims, an EP from experimental black metallers Lord Mantis, some traditional heavy metal from Occult Burial, UK purveyors of doom Allfather, some exciting black metal from Greek band Kawir, an LP from tech death metal legends Aborted, some progressive black metal from Holws of Ebb, some super cerebral black metal from Goetic Equivalent and whatever that genius Dalek release is. Initial Descent: April 8, 2016
It’s funny: even though I’d marked April 8 on my calendar weeks ago to signify it as “Ihsahn Day,” I somehow completely forgot that the new Deftones album, Gore — which I’ve as excited for if not more excited for — also drops today. Seriously. Didn’t even remember it until I was putting this post together. So yeah! Now I’m officially jacked for today!
It doesn’t stop there, though. We’ve also got a collaborative album from Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas, and new stuff from Geryon, Bog of the Infidel and even everyone’s favorite over-appreciated guitarist, Zakk Wylde! So let’s not waste any more time: here’s what’s on tap for Friday, April 8:

Album Review: Geryon – “The Wound and the Bow”
Jazz influenced metal is not a combination that is likely to knock your socks off in amazement. Shining exist as an example of free jazz inspired metal. Hedvig Mollestad Trio continue to put out quality works of guitar forward, jazz with a heavy feel. Further, Oranssi Pazuzu has led the charge of metal bands leaning in the jam band direction. So experimentation, particularly with jazz rhythms and riffs is not something to be shocked over (especially not when the band is from New York City the home of legendary experimentalists Pyrrhon). The way in which Geryon employs their influence is, however, something new. While not the most accessible or palatable record of the year, The Wound and the Bow is certainly an interesting listen worth the roughly forty-five minutes of your time. Continue reading
