The Nine Circles ov…Cradle of Filth

I first discovered Cradle of Filth via the temporary resurrection of Headbanger’s Ball in 2003, when their video for “Mannequin” was in heavy rotation. This catchy yet creepy song stuck with me and helped me remember the band when I started getting more into black metal the following year, picking up the Lovecraft and Witch Hearts compilation and getting thoroughly hooked. “But they’re not really black metal, what are you talking about?!” Ah yes, I understood early on how controversial the band was within black metal circles. They, along with Dimmu Borgir and Satyricon, had achieved some crossover mainstream success in the mid-2000s. And thus this leads us into my Nine Circles ov…Cradle of Filth. Continue reading

Visions ov Hell: Cradle Of Filth – “Blackest Magick In Practice”

In case you forgot, and I’m sure many of you have, Cradle Of Filth released Hammer of the Witches back on July 10th. Dan and I shared our own thoughts on the 11th studio album from symphonic black metallers on The Nine Circles Podcast way back when, however that is where our coverage end. That said, album did quite well upon release, especially here in the United States. Now, as we approach the end of 2015, Cradle Of Filth have released a new music video for the fifth track on the album, “Blackest Magick In Practice”. Continue reading

Album Review: Cradle of Filth – “Hammer of the Witches”

Heaven forbid — sorry, hell forbid — Cradle of Filth ever stop making music. How would metal’s legions of try-too-hardists ever survive if their greatest champions were to call it a day? Mercifully, that’s not something they need to think about just yet, as the UK vets have returned with album number eleven, Hammer of the Witches. All told, it’s a relatively safe set, and while it’s not likely to win them any new fans, it also shouldn’t have much trouble appeasing their existing base.  Continue reading
