Initial Descent: September 18 – 24, 2016

Neurosis
Neurosis

Anyone complaining that there hasn’t been a great week for metal thus far in 2016 needs to go immediately and start over, but there won’t be any complaining after this week. Mostly due to Neurosis‘ highly anticipated eleventh full length Fires Within Fires finally seeing the light of day. But that’s not all; Fatalist are back with their insanely good Swedeath saturated The Bitter End, Predatory Light further their black metal chaos on Predatory Light, Trap Them punch you in the mouth with their fifth album Crown Feral while Witchskull breaks out the bluesy doom on The Vast Electric Dark. Switching gears a bit, Dysrhythmia bends time on their progressive instru-metal album The Veil Of Control — let the dissecting begin. And last but not least, Insomnium‘s epic fifth full length Winter’s Gate is a blast. As stated, its another stacked week here on Initial Descent and literally, there’s something for everyone. Stage Dive: Which Wacken Band Name Holds The Most Potential?

Well, a week from today I will be arriving at the Wacken Open Air festival grounds embarking on a metal adventure of a lifetime. That in mind, this will be my final Stage Dive until I return to the States two weeks from this coming Sunday. As you’ve noticed, I’ve casually mentioned this once or twice over the past week (fine, maybe more). Sticking to that trend, I pose this question to you:

BASED ON NAME ALONE, WHICH BAND SHOULD I BE MOST EXCITED FOR AT W.O.A. 2014?

I really do want your opinion here, because there are a lot of bands. I’m attempting to avoid bias and am discounting all knowledge of the bands I already know. For example, there are great bands with great names. Take Demonic Resurrection, Fleshgod Apocalyse, and A Pale Horse Named Death. Needless to say, those names are right up there. Conversely, you have bad bands with decent names (I guess), like Omnia or Heaven Shall Burn. Although, to be fair, these artists both entertain me on some level. Need evidence? Here. Finally you have the mysteries in Plague Throat and Excrementory Grindfuckers. So, which of these 120+ names has tickled my curiosity the most? That would be

Nachtgeschrei.

Really, the only thing I know about this band is the name. And the name is awesome. Let me explain. For one, it’s in German. So major props for that. Duh. Secondly, the translation. ‘Nacht’ refers to ‘night’. ‘Geschrei’ means ‘shouts’. So to me, this translates to roughly ‘Night Shouter’ which could also be interpreted as ‘Shouting Night’ or basically anything to that effect. For the assholes, here’s your translator. So, that’s kinda awesome. It screams black metal to me. An unknown band that I loosely translate their invented term of a name to something that sounds like it could be a black metal band name… takes the cake. And any statistician would hate how I came to that conclusion. Sorry.

Honorable mentions go out to Elmsfeuer and Ax’ N Sex. FYI, for those that were around for our MDF week here at Horns Up, you saw a similar Stage Dive then. So, here’s round two. I know most of you (or all) won’t be joining me – and if you are, fuckin’ hit me up, yo! – but your input is still very much desired here because there are some righteous names. Alright, that’ll wrap things up. Later, everyone.
