The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 275 (3.18.2023)

He saw the light flash like a child’s sparkler on the 4th of July. It registered for an instant, then faded in the roar of the explosion reverberating in the open air. There was an odor that he couldn’t identify by name (it was cordite, not really used in gunpowder mixtures since the end of WWII) but instinctually knew. All of this happened in the space between synapses before his body acknowledged the impact of the bullet that – according to the laws of physics – he should have noticed before the sound of the revolver, or indeed the smell. As he dropped to the ground, consciousness slowly fading into the ether he had one solitary, lonely thought:

“What’s going to kick off the 275th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist?”

“The title track from the new Night Demon album,” a voice we only hear at the end of our life’s thread replied.

What’s the rest of the staff listening to? How about Boris, new Frozen Soul, Sortilege, Noxium Ferus, Lunar Chamber, Hideous Divinity, Paraphilia, Úlfúð and Afsky, not to mention the “correct” mix of a classic Megadeth song. There’s also tracks from Midwife & Vyva Melinkolya, Catherine Wheel, Mrs. Piss, old school love with Exodus and Exumer, a brutal throwback to Death Grips and much more.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week…

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 184 (6.5.2021)

playlist - mixtape

Good morning and welcome to another Saturday morning mixtape. We have a full house of picks this week, from a Pride month kickoff from Violet Cold, to some classic Wolves in the Throne Room, to the mesmerizing new single from King Woman (a particular staff favorite). Check all that out and much more at the link below

CANTO: Gojira, Boris, Hideous Divinity, and More

My ambitions to acquire and build out a camper van are above 0%.

  • We should probably start with Gojira, who released another new track from Fortitude. This one is titled “The Chant”, and it is sure to be polarizing. Naturally, I love it. Anyway, that album is officially released to the world this coming Friday, April 30th.
  • Boris are releasing a visual (streaming) party for the release of NO. The viewing period start on May 1st and will run through the 10th. The video was shot with a 360 degree camera, making this thing pretty damn immersive. A tour “in your head”, as it’s described. Here’s the link to the Boris YouTube channel, for when the time comes.
  • I’m just going to drop this in because anything “Alien” makes me happy. Hideous Divinity released a new EP, LV-426, this past Friday (frustratingly NOT on 4/26) though Century Media, and it’s very much worth checking out. There’s also a video for “Chestburst” out there as well. See? All kinds of “Alien” stuff.
  • I suppose we can wrap up with some more melodic metal. This is the new video (as of last Friday) from Dead Atlantic for “Falling into the Grave”. That track is taken from Lost, which drops this year through Zombie Shark Records.

CANTO: Roadburn Redux, Gojira, Hideous Divinity, and More

The NHL trade deadline is always a weird day.

  • Ok, let’s start with Roadburn Redux news. There were a few more lineup announcements, but the biggest thing shared today is the full festival schedule. Thursday/Friday are just around the corner, and there’s a certain set that I plan ending my work week with. What does everyone else have circled so far?
  • Oh look, another new Gojira track. Check out the lyric video for “Into The Storm“, the latest taken from Fortitude. I haven’t listened to this one yet, but I will say that April 30th release date suddenly feels somewhat close, and I am quite excited.
  • Hideous Divinity have released the second single from their new EP, LV-426. That effort is set for an April 23rd release through Century Media Records, and can be pre-ordered here. As for that new single, it’s titled “Chestburst”, and you can check out the video at this location.
  • And we’ll close with the new track from Myronath titled “Evigt Mörker”. That one is taken from their upcoming new album, Djevelkraft, which will be out through Hellstain Productions sometime in the near future. Not sure exactly when, I didn’t look very hard.
