Throwback Thursday: Market Square Day and Dio, v. 2016

Remember last year (or maybe two years ago?) when I used Market Square Day as a reason to talk about Dio? Well, that time is here again. A few key pieces of background information: 1. I live in Portsmouth, NH — the best small city on the god damn planet. And that’s partly because 2. Dio was born here. Finally, 3. This coming Saturday is Market Square Day. So what better opportunity is there to talk about all of the above than the present? Continue reading

Throwback Thursday: Jack Black Turns 45

So I happened to get REALLY lucky with the #tbt for this week. I get to help celebrate the 45th birthday of one of our favorite human beings alive: Jack Black.

Yes, the mastermind behind Tenacious D is getting up there in years, which in turn makes me feel old. But fuck it, I owe many laughs to this individual. As such, I am presented the difficult task of picking exactly one moment of his career to share this Thursday. Honestly, between School of Rock, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, and Nacho Libre, there’s no shortage of material… and that’s just movies. Naturally, I had to grab something as all-encompassing as I could…

That is opening scene from The Pick of Destiny. The song is called ‘Kickapoo’. And yes, that is Meatloaf as young Jables’ father and yes, that is Dio providing guidance, both with wonderfully sung verses. How can you top this? It kicks off one of my favorite comedies of all time and for what it’s worth, the song is fucking hilarious. If you care, the movie came out in 2006. If you haven’t seen it yet, I am judging you. Get on that shit.

How about some highlights? First, lyrical content… especially JB’s song about slicing the balls off of a dragon. Can we talk about his facial expressions throughout? His attempt to find Hollywood? Watch the map closely. It takes him a couple tries.

But really, the whole thing is amazing. Tenacious D is the best. I speak for us all when I say ‘Happy Birthday, Jack Black.’
