Remember last year (or maybe two years ago?) when I used Market Square Day as a reason to talk about Dio? Well, that time is here again. A few key pieces of background information: 1. I live in Portsmouth, NH — the best small city on the god damn planet. And that’s partly because 2. Dio was born here. Finally, 3. This coming Saturday is Market Square Day. So what better opportunity is there to talk about all of the above than the present?
Ok, ok, you probably have a question. “What the shit is Market Square Day?” Well, Market Square refers to the busiest and most enjoyable intersection in this here town. It’s, ya know, a square. So, moving along from there, Market Square Day is a day-long celebration of Portsmouth held, you guessed it, in this famous square. The actual date is June 10th, 2016 and the day features way too many tourists, but fortunately an equally impressive supply of amazing food, beer, and vendors on the street if shopping is your thing. Basically, it’s an excuse to celebrate absolutely nothing aside from the town you live in or near. And also summer. But do you need more of an excuse than that to party?
That covered, what about Dio? Well, aside from Dio being born here (have I mentioned that enough times yet?) there’s been a recent push to erect a statue of one of the most important faces in metal and rock history in downtown Portsmouth. It began with a petition that has gained serious steam. The statue will be voted on by city council on June 20th, less than two weeks away. So, the time to support this cause is now! Here’s a Facebook event for those that care and/or live nearby.
I’ve gone on and on about how amazing Dio is. And rightfully so. Comedy aside, as fans of music — of all genres — we owe so much to the influence he had on the art that we love. Not a day should pass where he is not celebrated at least in some way. And today, rather than remember an old live clip from Wacken or something of that nature, I instead want to share one of the best scenes from Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s amazing. Get on that shit, appreciate its glory, and proceed to laugh your ass off. But before then, here’s a nice sample that includes our favorite inventor of the metal horns:
Did I mention Meatloaf is also involved? What a wonderful flick. I’m going to go watch it in full and get ready for Saturday… and June 20th.
“Ein Bier… bitte.”
