Where does the time go? Not only are we halfway through November but 2016 is almost done. And I’m pretty sure none of us are sad to see it pass, of course with the exception of the quality metal we’ve had thus far. I will miss that aspect of 2016. Speaking of, we have another chocked full list of metal on this edition of Initial Descent. Green Bastard rub elbows with Sleep and Yob on their fantastic debut Pyre. Metallica break an 8 year silence on Hardwired…To Self Destruct and yes, to answer the burning question, it’s a really good album, and one that finds the band in a form we haven’t heard from them in a very long time. HORNNS blow smoke rings of stoner sludge on Telepath, and yet another band breaking a long silence — 16 years to be exact — is Quicksand Dream with their epic brand of traditional metal on Beheading Tyrants, and Projections I finds Headless Kross even further down the psychedelic doom tunnel. Album Review: Green Bastard – “Pyre”

Green Bastard - Pyre

In 2012, an international team of scientists began preparations to mount a massive expedition to drill past the Earth’s crust in order to reach the mantle; seeking a way, in their words, to “grind their way through ultra-hard rocks.” If the approximate $1 billion budget is approved they could begin as early as the 2020s. And if this for-now theoretical expedition manages to achieve their goal, I suspect they will find the rumbling giant that is the bottom end of Pyre, the debut from New Hampshire’s new sludge/doom lords Green Bastard.
