I’m conflicted with No Cross No Crown.

Not because it’s a bad or mediocre album – my conflict comes in reviewing this latest offering from Corrosion of Conformity with fresh ears and holding back the urge to compare. Both Deliverance and Wiseblood are absolute pillars in my listening habits and collection, and I’m coming to the conclusion it’s impossible to be objective when this reunion album with Pepper Keenan has been one of my most anticipated releases for so long. Visions ov Hell: Sourvein – “Avian Dawn”

Sourvein. If you know, then nothing else needs to be said. For everyone else, Sourvein is a sludge/doom juggernaut from North Carolina that has been around since 1992 but have never really had the kind of acclaim they should have. True, the band’s story is one of heartbreak after heartbreak, a literal revolving door of musicians and bouts of alcoholism among other things. But Aquatic Occult, their fourth full length, finds the band with a stable home at Metal Blade and with possibly their finest album to date. Earlier this year Corrosion of Conformity reunited with Pepper Keenan and shows were announced. The only question is why would you not be there? I mean, the shot to get to see them live particularly like this was a no-brainer for me. But this date was particularly special as YOB and Black Cobra were on the bill. Picture perfect union if there ever was one. A true dream bill that more than lived up to what I had been hoping and waiting for. Continue reading →

Corrosion Of Conformity

Corrosion of Conformity‘s criminally underrated sixth full length, second of the Pepper Keenan era, America’s Volume Dealer, is officially fifteen years old as of last month. I couldn’t rightfully ring the death bell on September without at least a #tbt showcasing one of my longstanding picks off the album, “Diablo Blvd.” This track has a greater focus on groove and a looser feel than Wiseblood or Deliverance but sits comfortably beside anything off of either.
