Real hockey starts this week.

System of a Down have announced a string of tour dates… in Europe. Still, activity is activity. I would love to see them live again if the stars were to ever align in such a way. Oh, those dates are all next summer.
In today’s business news, Victory Records has been sold to Concord Music Group. I don’t have specifics, but the Billboard link mentions Victory pulled in up to $5 million per year and was probably sold in the $27-34 million range. Still, the punk label as well all knew it will be no more. I assume.
For those that missed it, Metallica had to cancel a tour while James Hetfield checks back into rehab. Obviously, we all hope he pulls out of this battle, but if there’s any bright side to this, it’s the support that’s been vocalized publicly by other musicians he’s had a positive influence on.
Finally, we’ll close with a new music video from hardcore/sludge outfit Minors. Because that’s pretty much what I need in life right now. The song is called “Garden of Dismalism”, taken from Abject Bodies, which is out now on Holy Roar Records.

By the time this goes to press I’ll be working my way out of the mountains and back into the hustle and bustle. I’ll probably get lost along the way and will, no doubt, be cold but it’ll be worth it. Nature rules, you should try it sometime. Anyway, thanks to these music players / phones / leashes we all have I won’t be without some of this week’s shiny new metal. Long list ahead so let’s get to it…

Ontario’s Minors was recently one of our Profile subjects and we said that their brand of sludge fueled hardcore would “leave jaws planted firmly on floors the world over” on sophomore outing Abject Bodies and we weren’t kidding – take our word for it and buy it. Next up is new music from Primitive Man and Hell which separately would rule by default but to have them on the same album, in Split format, is likely to knock the earth off its axis with their massive combination of death, doom and sludge. Pernicion wreak trve death metal havoc on their EP Seek What They Sought, and Sanhedrin keep the flames of classic heavy metal extremely well stoked on The Poisoner.

Profile: Nick from Ontario’s Sludgy Hardcore Punishers Minors

2017 saw the debut release, Atrophy, from Ontario’s Minors which was an explosion of sludge fueled hardcore that seemed just as intent to cause harm as it was to drag earlobes through the mud and muck. The band’s sophomore outing, Abject Bodies, will hit the masses later this month and it’s another exploration into just how heavy handed sludge and hardcore can be. And particularly so since this quartet has tightened up their already bulletproof approach. Hints of Primitive Man and Converge come flying from the speakers on “Consumed” while a track like “Flesh Prison” relies on caustic grooves and relentless pacing. It’s this back and forth that the band excels at even better this time out but the production and overall delivery here will leave jaws firmly planted on floors the world over.
