Somewhere there’s a paper with dozens of esoteric equations and quotations that would explain exactly why Cosmovore, the debut from Ulthar would be right up my alley.  The fact that it failed to connect upon initial release is a mystery for the ages (though most likely due to reviewer burnout) but fortunately no such issue befalls the mad vortex of sophomore album Providence, which brings a dizzying maelstrom of Lovecraftian madness and twisted death metal to reflect the insanity infecting the world at this moment in time, in any time. Album Review: Extremity – “Extremely Fucking Dead”

It should be no surprise that death metal and black metal are the two genres I frequent the most, yet what draws me to death metal artists and what draws me to black metal artists are often completely at odds. As I have mentioned previously, my favorite black metal bands tend to be those that take basic the formula of the genre and move it in a different direction, adding their own unique spin and often incorporating disparate elements in the music. With death metal, however, the more complex the music gets, the more I feel like it loses its soul. Give me boneheaded riffs with no frills and no junk and I’m a happy man. So when I say that Extremity‘s debut Extremely Fucking Dead is some of the most satisfying death metal I’ve heard in a long time, you should know what you’re getting into. But it is most definitely something you want to get into.   Continue reading
