We’ll be crossing April Fools Day this week and maybe this is when we find out that all this shit has been a cruel April Fools joke. We won’t and don’t get your hopes up. One thing that isn’t a joke is this week’s list of new metal, let’s do that now; first up is a new one from black metallers Wode who absolutely kill it, again. Next up is a pair of black metalish albums; a weird but good one from Sleepwalker and a death metal leaning one from Unflesh, and rounding out the top slots in intergalactic death metal form is The Beast of Nod—think of a favorite sci-fi space flick then put this on as the soundtrack. Tasty. So, brave the jokes this week with some extra smart ass and go buy some stuff off this list.Continue reading
We’re back again folks. I don’t have much to say except that I’m grateful again for my colleagues and friends who pick up my weekly column when life gets in the way (go check out Corey’s Evcharist from this past week and witness his return to the throne). This week has had some pretty amazing highs and some pretty serious lows but I’m grateful for the music that’s allowed me to hit the pause button on life along the way. You’ll find some of our favorite stuff here that we’ve been jamming the last week, as usual, irrelevant of genre and release date constraints. Just an honest look at what we here listen to in our down time. Take a look and a listen below, and thanks for checking it out.
We’ll save the long-winded rhetoric for the final list. There’s fifteen albums listed here that are categorized as “Honorable Mentions” because that’s typically how these list things work. But in reality it’s a disservice to relegate the incredible music contained herein to a tier of “also ran.” I spent much of the year thinking about what I needed music to do for me, and hunting for the songs, the bands, and the albums that worked – selfishly – for me. All of the albums listed below work on me and for me: pushing me to move further, holding me back when I’ve gone too far. I can’t ask for much more than that. Last year I titled my honorable mentions albums #40-26, but in truth a number can’t define the reinforcement and excitement this music provided.
So let’s dive in and talk about them for a spell. Continue reading
