The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 85 (6.22.2019)

playlist - mixtape

Another week has gone by and I’ve found myself beset with yet another annoying round of illness.  I’m beginning to question if there isn’t some divine presence out there that is punishing me for something or another; I used to be one of those people who never gets sick, and in the last 7 months I’ve dealt with everything from the flu to e. coli.  Fortunately it’s the weekend, which means I get free reign to lay around in bed and recuperate with some good music, and so do you, thanks to another installment of our weekly playlist.  Of particular note this week is the new Drab Majesty single and video accompaniment, which a ton of us on staff are going nuts for, but there’s plenty in there for any and all tastes.  Take a listen below, and as always, thanks for checking us out.

Scholar of the First Sin: Hera’s Best of 2018

EOY 2018 Header 9C

Yes, that title is a Dark Souls reference, and it’s a title I would like to have some day.

Anyway, it’s that time of year where we all just want to enjoy the last vestiges of holidays before the new year begins and we all decide to make lists. Whether it is for presents, things to throw out, or just a general shopping list for Christmas, we are bound to make one.

However, here in the hallowed halls of 9C, we are making one better: It’s time for EOY list season!

2018 was an impressive year for music in general. The sheer amount of releases this year was mind-blowing – so much so that I decided to make it into a top 20. That’s right: I expanded my list because 10 ain’t gonna cut it. However, there were a lot of albums left out from this list because they weren’t being as heavily played as they were supposed to be or they came out too late for me to actually put on this list (sorry Within Temptation!). I also decided to cut EPs from this list, as they deserve their own separate thing that won’t be explored until I have some more time. Let’s get started… Continue reading

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 58 (12.1.2018)

playlist - mixtape

Welcome back, y’all.  Sure has been a week, hasn’t it?  Hopefully the week you all have been having has been better than mine, but we’ve officially passed through the tunnel into the light, and I’m grateful to have our little mixtape here to dig into to get my weekend soundtrack set up the right way.

On a more somber note, we here at Nine Circles were very saddened to hear about the passing of Unique Leader Records founder and Deeds of Flesh guitarist Erik Lindmark.  Unique Leader are a force to be reckoned with in the world of death metal, giving a home to many of the most lauded and recognizable names in the worlds of technical and brutal death metal, and Erik’s work with Deeds of Flesh helped champion the sound that these bands would continue to shape to this day.  We have included several choice cuts from both Deeds of Flesh and other bands on the Unique Leader roster as a way to celebrate the memory of this giant of the scene.  If you are able to lend support to the family, a GoFundMe has been set up (right here) to benefit Erik’s wife and 5 year old daughter. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans around the globe.  Rest in Peace.
