I’m still recovering from the drunken mayhem that was our first ever Album Ramble – I hope you dug it, we plan to punish our livers monthly for your entertainment. Anyway, as if a new GREAT Katatonia was enough to drop this week, we have the second single from the mighty Metallica’s72 Seasons, so we’re kicking off with that – and the newest video from Katatonia backing it up.
After that it’s a gaggle of new and classic heavy hitters, including cuts from The Ocean, Bodyfarm, Polymoon, Turbid North, Ulthar, Nite, Asunojokei, Coheed & Cambria, Full of Hell, Cäina, Black Country New Road, Fvnerals, and Miserable.
My work is cut out for me this week. Ladies and gentlemen, today the Brothers Martinek™ celebrate a birthday. Which makes this playlist for them. Which means you’re going to get more Mountain Goats and Broken Social Scene and indie sad alt goodness than either you or I expected or intended.
Don’t worry, though. The others are still around with more extreme offerings…although who’s to say which is more extreme in the context of a metal site’s playlist? Bloodbath or My Bloody Valentine? Rotborn or Ride? Anyway, expect that as well as tracks from A Pregnant Light, Blackbraid, Judicator, Holy Fawn, Cloudrat, Black Anvil, Whitespade, Psionic Madness, Spitpool, Lamentations, as well as a slew of other tracks to kick your weekend off right.
When this comes out I’ll be 49 fucking years old. One goddamn year away from being half a century old. I haven’t been listening to metal for quite as long, but it’s close, you know? I gave quite a bit of thought about simply punting the playlist picks and just forcing all my favorite music down your throats. But I suppose age begets some kind of patience and humility, and besides…I’ll be doing that to my family all day. So maybe I’ll just sprinkle some aggressive favorites throughout and let you suss out which ones they are in this, the 234th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist.
I’m not going to do the usual gang of idiots round up (that’s a reference to Mad Magazine, the crew here all rule); but I’ll mention that folks seems to be pretty hot on new music from Artificial Brain, Gwar, Amon Amarth, Benighted and Origin. Find that inside plus a ton more music to get your weekend in the proper gear ratio.
