It appears I’m destined to be late to the party with my year end list, again. But really, who reads year-end lists in January anyway?
And you, apparently, read them as well, so thank you for checking mine out. This year was quite a ride for me, with not as many ups as there were downs unfortunately, but I made it through, and if there is nothing else for me to hold on to, it’s that. I made it. I’m still here, I still have a roof over my head, a loving partner, and the support of a legion of family and friends. And as always, good music to provide the soundtrack along the way.
Which brings us to what stood out to me in 2018. While this was a great year for music as any we’ve been having, my list this year is a little more brief than previous years. I found a lot of albums I liked this year, but the ones that I loved came fewer and farther between. Perhaps this was a product of my headspace not being the best for most of the time. Maybe I’m just getting pickier as time goes on. Who knows. Lists are subjective, and this is only representative of one humble person. Graf Orlock, who define DIY hardcore punk these days, returns with their fourth full length (and 11th release overall) Examination of Violent Cinema, Volume 1which features inspiration from, you guessed it, violent films released in 2017 and autopsied corpse packaging but really it’s another notch in the belt of a band that defines its own genre in 2018. Viscera/// return with a quick hitter EP in the form of City of Dope and Violenceand it’s a twisted rail of hardcore, sludge and experimentation but a fast trip you’ll want to take. Svartidauði have been through a whirlwind of life happenings in their short existence but that didn’t stop them from releasing a stunning sophomore effort of epic black metal on Revelations of the Red Sword. Last up top this week is the labyrinthine maze of progressive / technical death metal from Zealotry on At the Nexus of All Stillborn Worldswhich is the band’s maiden voyage for Unspeakable Axe, perfect fit.

Welcome back, y’all. Sure has been a week, hasn’t it? Hopefully the week you all have been having has been better than mine, but we’ve officially passed through the tunnel into the light, and I’m grateful to have our little mixtape here to dig into to get my weekend soundtrack set up the right way.
On a more somber note, we here at Nine Circles were very saddened to hear about the passing of Unique Leader Records founder and Deeds of Flesh guitarist Erik Lindmark. Unique Leader are a force to be reckoned with in the world of death metal, giving a home to many of the most lauded and recognizable names in the worlds of technical and brutal death metal, and Erik’s work with Deeds of Flesh helped champion the sound that these bands would continue to shape to this day. We have included several choice cuts from both Deeds of Flesh and other bands on the Unique Leader roster as a way to celebrate the memory of this giant of the scene. If you are able to lend support to the family, a GoFundMe has been set up (right here) to benefit Erik’s wife and 5 year old daughter. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans around the globe. Rest in Peace.

As I’ve probably mentioned here before, I love EP’s and demos almost as much as I love full albums. There’s something about the condensed goodness, coupled with my ever dwindling attention span, that makes me wish these little gems got their own recognition sometimes when it comes to year-end lists.
