The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 220 (2.26.2022)

playlist - mixtape

Say goodbye, February. I wish I could say goodbye to the panic, the anxiety, and the fear as well, but tyrants are gonna tyrant, I guess. At least there’s music to keep us from falling over the brink, so let’s just jump into the 220th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, and do what we can to stay informed, stay sane, and make what small differences we can to make this planet better for everyone.

I’m framing the playlist out with some Scatterbrain, because that describes my mental state at the moment and quite frankly it’s the music I needed to lighten the mood up. Anton brings in Ernia, Mass Worship, and Playgrounded. Josh mixes it up with Analepsy, Atoll, Black Flag and some vintage Dokken, among others. Vincent continues falling for Mitski and toe, but also rages with Worm and the new Falls of Rauros. Angela features the latest from Messa, Celeste, and Trna as well as a banger from Oathbreaker. And Buke? Buke goes with the latest from Spirit Adrift and Evil Invaders, but then hits the wayback button for some Candlemass, Dark Angel, Mercyful Fate, and Megadeth.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 213 (1.8.2022)

How did the first week of 2022 treat ya? I spent a lot of it railing against the absurdity of my workplace and listening to a lot of Black Sabbaths Sabotage. What’s up with “Supertzar” man? That’s a crazy song. And why am I constantly shocked when “Hole in the Sky” suddenly cuts at the end? Weird album…lemme put it on one more time.

You’d think with all that I’d kick off the 213th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with some Sab but we’re gonna go with another one of my favorite bands. Did anyone expect Living Colour to come out of the gate so hard after their debut? “Time’s Up” borders on hardcore and it’s glorious. And since I’m feeling decidedly old school let’s throw in some Johnny Thunders, too. One month on Vincent is still listening to Midwife, but this time he throws in some Balance and Composure to balance things out. Josh swoops in with some massive heaviness courtesy of new music from Weigedood and the recently reviewed Necrophagous as well as the latest from Cryptum. Ian returns to remind us that yes, you CAN enjoy Blink-182 and Opeth in close proximity, and tosses in some Guided by Voices and toe for good measure. If there’s bleedthrough in the next room, it’s because Angela has decimating the foundations with brutality, blasting the new Fossilization single and praising the dark with some Midnartiis. Finally, I’m worried about the heat in Buke’s place, because he both Borknagar‘s “Cold Runs the River” and Immortal‘s “In My Kingdom Cold” in here. Maybe the latest from Wilderun will warm him up.

Where I live in New York we just got our first significant snowfall, so lemme go grab the shovel and get these tunes in my head. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 209 (12.11.2021)

playlist - mixtape

Friday night. I have the usual going on: new music in the cans and some nice whiskey (currently the Redbreast 12, a recent turn-on after being largely ignorant of Irish whiskeys)within easy reach. I need it because next week I start the three-week odyssey that is my annual End of Year round up but…great stuff just won’t stop coming out (seriously: wait until you all hear the new Ustalost). And 2022 is already off to an INSANE start. I’m listening to our early pick for January’s AOTM and…well, you’ll just have to wait to and see what it is. It’s damn good though – I can tell you that much.

But seeing as there’s a few weeks left in 2021, let’s kick off the 209th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with some killer tracks. The stoner gods have been shining their bloodshot eyes down on me, so my contribution this month kicks off with some classic High on Fire and a killer live track from Crown Lands, a band that has me scrambling to find opportunities to tell everyone how good the peculiar mix of Rush and stoner prog they’re putting out in the universe is. Josh picks up the baton for both the old and the new, mixing up some vicious death metal out of the Transcending Obscurity bullpen with Paganizer and Hellfrost and Fire but also some razor sharp Christmas hair metal courtesy of Dokken. Anton shows just how strong the early part of 2022 is shaping up to be with new tracks from Hath and Celeste, while Vincent strikes my heart with the wonderful toe and keeps it crazy heavy with the latest from Succumb. Hera raises her head from the abyss to provide some evil delights in the form of Eisbrecher, Khôra, and…and…(checks to be sure) yup, something called Infected Mushroom.

All that and Buke bringing us home with some classics from Rainbow, Savatage, Nevermore, and the newest single from Voivod. So what are you waiting for?

I’m not sure where you all are, but here in New York it finally feels like Autumn…right on the porch knocking at the door of All Hallow’s Eve. It’s the time of frights, of golds and browns and dark and whispers. So I can’t think of a better way to kick off the two hundred and third Nine Circles playlist than with a little Samhain to get you all in the mood. And since more than a few of the staff are completely head over heels for the new Mastodon, we threw a doozy of a late track in here for you, too.

Elsewhere we got you covered no matter your tastes: Josh comes in hot with some classic Fastway and one of my favorites for the year, Green Lung. Zyklonius is gushing over the new tech metal from Allegaeon, while Vincent throws some delicious curveballs with toe and his beloved Mountain Goats. We’re not quite back to the extreme, as our Northern Brother Jon dips into his first tastes of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, but tempers it with some mewithoutyou. The Man with the Mic himself Buke goes old and new school with Manowar and Monolord, while Ian goes crazy for Archspire and Angela digs into the new Ghost Bath and closes us out with a bonafide classic from Siouxsie and the Banshees. And that’s only the tip of iceberg of what’s in store, so buckle up, grab your mask, and hit play below. We’ll see you next week.
