Welcome back, y’all. Sure has been a week, hasn’t it? Hopefully the week you all have been having has been better than mine, but we’ve officially passed through the tunnel into the light, and I’m grateful to have our little mixtape here to dig into to get my weekend soundtrack set up the right way.
On a more somber note, we here at Nine Circles were very saddened to hear about the passing of Unique Leader Records founder and Deeds of Flesh guitarist Erik Lindmark. Unique Leader are a force to be reckoned with in the world of death metal, giving a home to many of the most lauded and recognizable names in the worlds of technical and brutal death metal, and Erik’s work with Deeds of Flesh helped champion the sound that these bands would continue to shape to this day. We have included several choice cuts from both Deeds of Flesh and other bands on the Unique Leader roster as a way to celebrate the memory of this giant of the scene. If you are able to lend support to the family, a GoFundMe has been set up (right here) to benefit Erik’s wife and 5 year old daughter. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans around the globe. Rest in Peace.
With the second full length from Unmerciful now out to the masses (covered here) I couldn’t help but think about the band’s label, Unique Leader Records. Mostly because I haven’t consistently frequented their wares in a few years but there was a time the label was ground zero for my desire to find the most brutal sounding death metal around, not to mention some of the most technical as well. Some of my favorite releases reside with this label and had it not been for them I would have missed out on an integral piece of my metal history. The label has never lost sight of their original vision and has continued to be a benchmark for the extreme sector of death metal. You can connect with their label on Bandcamp, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram or their third-party merch website. Continue reading →
Holy shit, it’s another big week for metal albums. Where do you even begin with this stuff? Okay, well, you know where we’re going to begin with this stuff just by looking at the picture above — with Revocation, of course. The band one of the best logos in metal — which they inexplicably decided to omit from their new, sixth album, Great Is Our Sin. Oh well. What else?
How about a new album from Hammers of Misfortune, which might just have my favorite cover art of the year so far? And how about one from Denouncement Pyre? And one from Profanatica? Hell, even Periphery and Black Crown Initiate drop some new material today. In short, I’ve got a lot of listening to get to — so I’m going to cut this intro off right about meow. Here’s what’s on tap this week: Continue reading →
Unmerciful, a band not heard from in album form since 2006 and one that by all accounts could have been dead around 2009, finally offer up their second technical and brutal death metal full length Ravenous Impulse. The band has been through its ups and downs over the years including a revolving door of members and the aforementioned break. However, for this album, the staff are more than competent at this devastating branch of death metal. Unique Leader has quite the ear for this sort of punishment and this album does not disappoint.
