Feral
Feral

‘Tis the season for hopes and dreams (aka: new years resolutions) that fly by like memories on the hard drive of some tragic half human, half robot that’s been beat up and spit out over the course of too many attempts to recreate a life that once was. If you subscribe to this line of thinking, stick to it and see where it leads but don’t half-ass it. New metal? Yes, we got it and just in time after the big purge of eoy lists. What’s up this week? Read on…

Let’s get this started with a very late December release that trips the filthy, nasty  Swedeath trigger and while Feral isn’t reinventing the wheel on Flesh For Funerals Eternal they are keeping the stream everflowing. Vanha returns with an incredible sophomore effort on the mournfully dark Melancholia and brutal death metallers Meathook break a long silence with the fetid gore of Crypts, Coffins, Corpses – yes, it sounds exactly as the title suggests.

Quantity will return in the coming week or so but this is a great batch of releases to shake the holiday gluttony and get your head in the game for what’s to come. Sink below to kick off 2019 and don’t forget: if you commit, don’t quit. Continue reading

Nine Circles ov…My (unlistened to) Bandcamp Collection

Hello. My name is Chris, and I have a problem.

I started using Bandcamp about 2 years ago. At first it was innocent: maybe an album here or there I read about in Decibel but couldn’t find on a streaming service. Occasioanlly a compilation or anthology I heard about from Henry Rollins’s amazing weekly radio show on KCRW. It was fun, it was innocent, and most importantly, no one was getting hurt. And then, in January of 2016, someone had the bright idea to start this #metalbandcampgiftclub thing and everything just kind of went out the window. At first it was just giving, you know? What’s wrong with giving? But then I started getting, too. And it got harder to just give, right? Because maybe you wanted that album too, you see? And it just spiraled and skyrocketed and every other terrible metaphor you can think of to say things, well…got out of hand.

Seriously, Bandcamp is a great service for both fans and artists. And when I sat down to think about what to write for this week’s Nine Circles ov… I realized I had all this great music I hadn’t listened to yet, so why not pick a few highlights and share ’em here with the fine Nine Circles readership. I’ll try to remember the whys and wherefores, you just check out some great metal.   Continue reading

Soothsayer

Well, that’s it folks. We made it to the end of this year but not without a few more legends leaving us too soon. RIP to all of those that have fallen and guard the remainder with every ounce of your being. There were some positives to this year: good friends new and old, good metal across the board and good bourbon just to name a few. So, as we close out this year hold your loved ones close and call a friend you haven’t talked to in awhile, it may just give them that extra boost they needed. Releases are in short supply but as we’ve seen recently the quality hasn’t diminished. This week we have At This Great Depth from Ireland’s atmospheric doom merchants Soothsayer, Vanha releases their debut full length Within the Mist of Sorrow which is an epic journey through melancholic doom metal and Plasmodium gives us an avantgarde and psychedelic black metal album with Entheognosis. And, as usual, that’s not all so hit that continue reading button to see the rest. Continue reading
