Hey all. This has been a great year for music, made better because I got to share so much of my thoughts about what I was hearing with you, alongside the rest of the Nine Circles crew. It’s been a pleasure to work with some of the most talented people I’ve had the honor to know. Thanks to Dan and Corey for getting me started, to Josh Stewart for being a phenomenal editor, and to all the amazing people I do this with whose writing inspired me to better my own. Here’s to many more. And now that the sap is out of the way, on to the tunes.

Welcome to another edition of In the Flesh, a recap of the best live metal has to offer. On the 2nd of November, I had the extreme pleasure of catching New Zealand’s Ulcerate on the opening date of their Shrines of Paralysis North American tour, featuring support from Montreal’s Phobocosm and Zhrine from Reykjavik, Iceland. Corey’s tied up this week, so joining Dan on the pod is special guest Daniel Jackson! Dan is the mastermind behind Void Ritual, Dead Wretch and a bunch of other projects, and was also recently named editor of the forthcoming Kwinn Metal blog. The conversation was recorded on Tuesday, and took the two Dans all over the place — from Opeth to Maryland Deathfest to Mare Cognitum and more. It’s a hell of a time, trust us.
All that and much, much more in Episode 52, so check it out!

There probably would be more on this list, but a lot of records came out in the final week of June that I will probably sneak into my Q3 list. Through much internal wrestling, tears, and over 1,000 hours of listening to new records, I have finally been able to come up with my list of favorites for 2nd quarter 2016. Continue reading →
