The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 153 (10.31.2020)

playlist - mixtape

Yep, 10.31. HALLOWEEN. The best day of the year. So, in light of this, we bring you our spooky edition or gore edition or occult edition, all depends on what video is playing at the time. Brother Vince made the call for spooooooooky videos and I was over here with zero power or internet so in lieu of putting him on the last minute spot, you got me. So, what horrors are in store? What wicked tricks do we have? I bring some wicked death metal, King Diamond and Axeslasher, Jon brings some Devin Townsend, Angela brings Ghost B.C. and Misfits (topical, I might add), Ian brings The Mountain Goats (no surprise) and Pallbearer, and Hera brings some Zeal & Ardor. And, we close with two HITS from Two Minutes To Late Night and even though it’s not Christmas, both of these are still tailor made for today, you’ll see. Hit play and go scare up some good times somewhere or just hang in and sync this up with an old favorite horror movie. Either way, enjoy and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Welcome to another Saturday morning playlist.  Hope your Halloween was more treat than trick.  We’re eschewing the movie clips this week and going back to our regular format.  This week, I’m still jamming the new Alcest on repeat, Josh throws the new Schammasch song in, which a few of us are loving, and Chris reminds me take another listen to the last Morne album.  Take a listen to these and more down below:

Best of 2018: Josh’s List

EOY 2018 Header 9C

I had a plan in January. The same plan I have every January: to only document the albums that strike a major chord in one way or another. Yet, here we sit in December and I’m debating on at least one or two of my locked list and mourning those who fell off. Don’t take ‘fell off’ as a knock either. It simply means there was no shortage of amazing albums this year and well, I just enjoy the torture of whittling away on my favorites (not).

I’ve spoken at length about how important music is for life in general and how important it is for me as someone that had a finger on the play button for nearly all 8,760 hours that made up this year. EOY lists, I love them – always have and always will. It’s a chance to purge all the best and move on to yet another cycle into the unknown. Fire walk with me through the albums that hit home the hardest… Continue reading

I AM THE CAPTAIN NOW.

In less threatening words, hello readers!  You might recognize me as your drinking buddy, who brings you album and beer pairings every Friday that I am not infected with E. Coli.  Since I’ve been focusing on writing shorter reviews for the site this year, I’ve been thinking of more ways I can contribute outside of long-form writing.  Our weekly mixtape is one of my favorite things we’ve added to the site; it’s fun to be able to give our readership a kind of behind the scenes look at what we’re all jamming in our spare time without the necessity of deadlines shaping our listening habits.  So, I staged a coup-de-grace and snatched control of the column away from our editor, but in a nice way that actually helps him, because Josh is a very busy man.  Thanks to him for being gracious in defeat, and to you for reading this.  I hope you find something good to jam out to here, and if not, there’s always next week.  Enjoy Volume 57, friends.
