The last time I did something like this was back in 2018, but maybe I need to do it more. With so much music coming out it’s easy to just sit back and cherry pick the albums you’re already anticipating and write about it. And as many of our staff focus on things other than review writing (thank the heavens for the consistent and consistently excellent output of Ian) I suspect we’re missing out on a lot of great music that just isn’t getting the attention here at Nine Circles it should. So, foolish as it may seem I called out to Fearless Editor Josh™ with my request: give me nine promos for albums coming out this week, and I’ll listen and give some semblance of commentary for them. Ambitious? Perhaps. Stupid? Almost certainly. But if it gets some visibility for some bands and gets me attuned to some new music instead of constantly digging into the bins for rock and prog circa ’69-’74 all the better. So for this edition of Nine Circles ov... let’s take a look at some of the music coming out this week.

Black Fucking Cancer

I’ve been smack dab in the middle of hunting a particular album to no avail now for over a week. Most of us can feel that pain in one way or another. I know, I know; first world problems, right? Well, it has distracted me from real world problems such as a war, stupid gas prices, and all that sort of stuff that would fill an asshat to the brim. So, there’s that. Salty for a Monday…I’ll admit. ANYWAY, This week’s batch of new music has exactly the kind of pummeling my brain and body demands right now with black metal from Black Fucking Cancer and Dark Funeral and a pair of wicked death metal albums from Hellfrost and Fire and Aeviterne. These will definitely be my salt in the wounds for this week, but there’s also a healthy list of bruisers in the list that follows. Plenty here to pick your poison with this week…DO IT!

2016 has been an incredible year for music. So much came out in the first quarter that I never could narrow it down enough to name any favorites. For this second quarter, I was determined to compile this list if it killed me. There probably would be more on this list, but a lot of records came out in the final week of June that I will probably sneak into my Q3 list. Through much internal wrestling, tears, and over 1,000 hours of listening to new records, I have finally been able to come up with my list of favorites for 2^nd quarter 2016. Continue reading →

Nine Circles Ov… June 2016

Not surprisingly, as its become a theme in 2016, May was an outstanding month for metal. Well, another shocker: June is just as good. On the larger side of things a new Thrawsunblat LP was released, there was a Blut Aus Nord / AEvangelist split, Vale of Pnath dropped an LP, Aaron Turner’s celebrated sludge project Sumac put out an absolute burner and, thanks to Shadow Kingdom, Tombstalker finally got to release Black Crusades on vinyl. But where June really shocked was in the amount of smaller, quality releases. July is looking to change that fact with a bunch of super high-profile, high-quality releases on the horizon. But we will save those for the end. So, for now, let’s take a look at nine releases from June that knocked our (well at least my) socks off.

Morning, y’all. What a weird world we’re waking up in. #Brexit actually happened yesterday, and while I hesitate to make knee-jerk, YOU’RE ALL FUCKED pronouncements here — I won’t pretend to know enough about the intricacies of it all to do so — it’s admittedly hard not to focus on it in the aftermath. I spent last night glued to Twitter in the wake of it all and didn’t get a ton of sleep, so our weekly whole new-metal distraction is most definitely a welcome one.

So, the new-metal distraction. What’ve we got this week? Well, somewhat appropriately, we start with Thèmes pour la rébellion, the latest from Québécois separatists Forteresse. Beyond that, we’ve got a new album from Mercyful Fate legends Michael Denner and Hank Shermann under their Denner / Shermann moniker, and new stuff from Völur, Kayo Dot and more.
