The work of goth/punk band Samhain may be forever overshadowed by singer Glenn Danzig’s previous and subsequent projects, the Misfits and Danzig. However, it is not for lack of influence, with its prodigious, unconfined sound and horror aesthetics giving early shape to a legion of styles. We All Want Our Time In Hell Samhain Tribute, a new compilation album by a range of emerging and veteran punk, metal and noise bands, is deeply grounded in that history, with a glance to the future. What better way to kick it off than with a stacked list of metal that is as varied as the many horror movies you need to watch over the next 31 days. Anyway, Initial Descent knows you need it so, this week we have the amazing new album The Dark Hereafter from Winterfylleth, a jazzy avant-garde self titled debut from Brain Tentacles, Okkultokrati‘s Raspberry Dawn that is satan rock at it’s finest and of course Sorceress from everyone’s favorite target Opeth. Also Veilburner returns with their third full length of inherently evil and challenging black/death/experimental The Obscene Rite and Halshug cracks the earth in half with their brutal new album Sort Sind. Brain Tentacles - Brain Tentacles

Even if after several spins of Brain Tentacles jazz/doom/grind/avante-garde debut Brain Tentacles you still have no idea what’s going on there is little doubt you’ll be humming the rhythms and bass lines for days afterwards. This band is a power trio that doesn’t act like a power trio, rather they act like a metal version of a jam band that took a triple hit of acid and listened to Miles Davis or Ornette Coleman for way too long. This, of course, is a compliment as they triumphantly venture into a niche that very few have ever done successfully. Continue reading →
