End of the year, ladies and gentlemen. The time when lists flow like liquor at an office party, where the online community comes together as one gargantuan digital animal to do what it does best: nitpick, subtweet, and throw so many accusations of pandering, overrated and “hipster” picks that come December 31st we’ll all be sick and tired and never want to do this shit again.
Here we are at the dawn of October. One of the finest months of the year, obviously. What better way to kick it off than with a stacked list of metal that is as varied as the many horror movies you need to watch over the next 31 days. Even if after several spins of Brain Tentacles jazz/doom/grind/avante-garde debut Brain Tentacles you still have no idea what’s going on there is little doubt you’ll be humming the rhythms and bass lines for days afterwards. This band is a power trio that doesn’t act like a power trio, rather they act like a metal version of a jam band that took a triple hit of acid and listened to Miles Davis or Ornette Coleman for way too long. This, of course, is a compliment as they triumphantly venture into a niche that very few have ever done successfully. Continue reading →
