Myrkridia

As of last week, Deicide’s self titled album turned 30 years old. I look back on it like it was yesterday as that album was the one that really pushed me headfirst into death metal. Sure, I had dabbled in the tape trading circles but nothing I had heard to that point really grabbed me like “Lunatic of God’s Creation” or the pummeling of “Dead By Dawn.” Stone cold classic. Anyway, there’s no way to know which album off of these new release lists we’ll be looking back on with the same admiration but damn if it ain’t fun searching. About that search; this week brings us a sick manifestation of blackened death metal from Myrkridia, a soul crushing epic of death/doom from Convocation, and a tumultuous amalgamation of black metal, doom and noise from Swarming. And, as always, so much more below. Seek and enjoy. Continue reading

inexorum band
Inexorum

Alright then, no need to rehash current events. Pretty sure we all know shit’s on fire and if we don’t, shame on us. Might as well showcase some extreme metal for some extreme times, let’s get it. For their second full length, Inexorum pretty much lay waste to any band trying the whole atmospheric, emotionally packed yet razored raw black metal in one fell swoop—yea, it’s that good. Chaotic avantmetallers Netherlands return with another reason to fall in love with poppy hooks, extreme bass, velvety vocals, and melodies that stick like glue–count me in. Serocs flip the tech and brutal switches on their latest death metal EP, and Pyrrhon make us question whether it’s death metal or extreme metal or just genius at work but honestly no surprises here since they’ve been doing that since day one. Tons more to dig into below so go grab your soundtrack to the global fire. Continue reading

Exhorder
Exhorder

It’s fully warranted, at this point, to have the fall and Halloween stuff out in stores but I’m already seeing the xmas stuff out in full force. Seriously. I mean look, I get it, santa is a heck of a money maker but pump the brakes on everything except Halloween, just for now. Thanks. Anyway, we’ve got yet another great list of new metal this week so let’s dig in…

Exhorder return with a KILLER slab of melodic thrash and it’s so freaking good after 27 years of silence, it’s aggressive and in your face – welcome back! Cult of Luna push the limits of post metal on their seventh full length, Engulf offer up another EP of wicked good extreme death metal plus a guest spot from a certain member of Vitriol doesn’t hurt (mile wide grin for me), and Monolord slow it down a bit as well as trim a hair or two off their fuzz to make their Relapse Records debut a doom outing to remember. TONS more await…go do the thing.  Continue reading
