Best of 2022:  Angela’s List

Best of 2022

How is 2022 already gone?  I think we are all still processing 2020—I know I am—but here we are embarking on a new year with new albums to enjoy and discuss.  Before we move ahead, let’s take a look back at some impactful albums from this past year.  I have posted my list of honorable mentions which is ultimately an extension of this list (check that out here) and am now here with my Nine Circles Top Nine (™ ™ ™).  These albums accompanied me on many nature walks, commutes, and game nights.  They served as background music while I cooked, cleaned, created, and worked at my day job.  Needless to say, they have stuck with me throughout the year and resonated with me in big ways.

This is my 2022 soundtrack.  I hope you enjoy it and also check out my colleague’s lists here as we all have diverse tastes and stellar albums to gush about.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 255 (10.29.2022)

Spooky season is here again. I don’t know why but around the 9C Top Brass chat it’s been a lot of talk of classic black metal, particularly Emperor so I’m kicking this week off with a classic from their classic In the Nightside Eclipse. But damn, there’s also a new Katatonia album on the way and I have the receipts for the night a bunch of us got drunk listening to The Great Cold Distance and buying out the remaining vinyl copies on Amazon, so we gotta include new single “Atrium.”

And after that? Well, the crew contributes a bunch of new and classic killer music. How about new music from Avandra, Veilburner, Imprecation, VHS, Become the Watcher, Kreator, Birds in Row, Faetooth, Brutus, toe., Satanic Tea Co., and so much more?

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

Album Review:  Faetooth — “Remnants of the Vessel”

Bringing otherworldly hazy doom goodness, LA-based quartet Faetooth is here with their debut full-length album Remnants of the Vessel.  The band is self described as “fairy doom” and it is easy to see why.  Their music is full of dreamy clean vocals, echoing harsh vocals, entrancing riffs, and meditative shoegaze melodies with lyrical themes around nature and lore.  Their music conjures imagery of foggy forests, gnarled branches, and the divine mysterious beauty in our natural selves and surroundings.  The band released a well-received EP in 2019 and attention to these up and comers continues to grow—as it should.  Remnants of the Vessel is an impressive debut that showcases Faetooth’s talents as a band and as individual musicians.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 252 (10.8.2022)

The weather’s turning colder, which means it’s time to wear a sweater…and jump into some extremity. Let’s not mince words and instead jump right into the 252nd edition of the Nine Circles Playlist.

We’re starting with new music from Ritual Dictates and Blind Illusion, and the the crew takes over with new Ingested, Ripped to Shreds and Mord’A’Stigmata. We also turn the volume down a bit with Touche Amore and Lantlôs before ramping it back up with Glassing and a whole bunch more.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.
