CURSED IMAGERY: The Month in Album Art (May 2021)

cursed imagery

Another month down, another mess of ridiculous new album titles to cover in Cursed Imagery. May was interesting in that there were a number of different reasons for inclusion in this months column. We’ve got some of your standard “just bad” album covers, but then we’ve also got some that I decided to throw in because I liked the band name. Or because I liked the album name. Hell, there’s even a bonafide good album cover in here — albeit one that merited a bit of fun-poking via a highly appropriate Parks and Rec gif.

Anyway, we’ll get to all that in due time. Or in other words, “right now.” Let’s jump in!

Embracing the Descent: May 9 – 15, 2021

EMBRACING TEMP LOGO

Week 3 of this thing. I’m as surprised as you are, to be honest. But, maybe that’s a testament to what this year has had in store. Or, bourbon drives me to write some shit. You decide. Either way, this year has been strong, there’s no denying that. And, with the incoming album announcements it only gets stronger and stronger (get that AMENRA preorder in yet?). It’s a wave that has me on a high and it’s been a loooong time coming. So, humor me as we go in for a few more album picks and don’t forget to check out the full listing from Monday’s Initial Descent.

Grave Miasma
Grave Miasma

Another day, another dollar. If things were easy, we’d all sign up for the gravy train, but it just ain’t so. And, that train is long gone. Thinking out loud there…anyway, new metal time! Let’s get to it, Grave Miasma put forth probably their most deathy death metal album yet and I’m all here for it, Hore rolls out a freaking banger of a black ‘n’ roll album, Oldskull brings about memories of Morrisound era Floridian death metal, and Wolverine FINALLY are releasing their epic feature length audio / visual album on digital and vinyl—better believe I’m picking that up, excellent dark metal there. So, with no gravy train in sight, head below to find a new favorite from this long list of new releases. Drop some coin and enjoy the trip.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 180 (5.8.2021)

playlist - mixtape

Welcome to another Nine Circles Saturday morning mixtape. This week is particularly exciting, as it gives me the opportunity to hurl praises at new music from Amenra and Lantlôs (the first new Lantlôs song in seven years!). Plus, we’ve got the new Withered single, a new(ish) Grave Miasma track, and some classic Metallica to round it out. We’re keeping it real heavy this week, perfect for your weekend wake up call. Check it out below.

Best of 2016, Q2: Manny-O-War’s List

nine circles

Well, here we are again. Another three months past and I am still raving (maybe raging?) about what a ridiculously solid year this has been for metal. Yet, I sit here attempting to include metal that is technically going to be released in the third quarter. You think Blood Incantation isn’t going to end up on year end lists? Ryan Page of A.M.S.Gtotally blew the doors off his production formula and his 2016 release will be battling it out among the top candidates as well.  Further, Brooklyn-based Anicon are set to release their debut (which kills). Over in the prog world, Fates Warning, after working hard for over thirty years will soon put out what might be their best album to date. So, this year is bonkers. And lest we forget the upcoming Inter Arma release… So strap in! Continue reading
