Album Review: HYPNO5E — “Sheol”

Have you ever returned to a place that meant a lot to you, only to realize that you still haven’t come to grips with what has occurred there? This is the story that HYPNO5E brings on their sixth album, Sheol, where departed souls have returned to Lake Tauca, a former lake in Bolivia, where singer and guitarist Emmanuel Jessua grew up. The album is also part of a diptych that started with 2018’s A Distant (Dark) Source, which showed the end of the story. Although I knew nothing about the concept before deciding to review the album, I dove straight into it with an open mind, as I had a feeling this album would not disappoint.

CANTO: Predatory Void, Netherlands, Frozen Soul, and More

This feels like the least Friday Friday ever, even though it’s a long weekend. Oh well. What’s happening out there today?

Progressive sludge duo Netherlands unveiled a video for the title-track from their new album today. Give “Severance” a watch and listen here. That album is out on March 31 through Svart Records.
First of a couple Century Media mentions today. Frozen Soul are dropping Glacial Domination on May 19, and today they shared a NSFW video for “Morbid Effigy”. Give it a watch here. That track features John Gallagher of Dying Fetus, which is pretty dope.
I’ve rather enjoyed the latest from HYPNO5E, so let’s give the video for “Slow Steams of Darkness” a watch next. That’s taken from Sheol, which is out next Friday through Pelagic Records.
Predatory Void revealed details for their debut album. Seven Keys to the Discomfort of Being is out on April 21 through Century Media. Check out the video for “Endless Return to the Kingdom of Sleep” below.

CANTO: Entheos, Heidevolk, Enforcer, and More

Now that my Best of 2022 list is finally done, what should I do next?

Progressive death metallers Entheos have set March 3rd as the release date for Time Will Take Us All. Their new album will be out through Metal Blade, and a video for “I Am The Void” can be seen here.
Next up we have another video, this one from Enforcer. They’ve revived the classic track “Running In Menace”, available for your listening and viewing pleasure here. Really cool how they came to this production, if you read up on it a bit.
Only video links today. I’m making it happen. Check out the latest from HYPNO5E, in “Lava from the Sky”. Sheol is out on February 24th through Pelagic Records. Speaking of Pelagic, I think 2023 is gonna be pretty massive for the label.
Epica released a one-shot live video for “Rivers”, footage taken from a performance in Chile. That falls right before Friday’s vinyl reissue release for The Phantom Agony, Consign To Oblivion and Design Your Universe, should you be interested.
We’ll head into the latter stages of the week with some pagan folk metal. Here is the latest video from Heidevolk for the title-track off their new album, Wederkeer. That one drops on February 24th through Napalm Records.

CANTO: Candlemass, Hypno5e, Ulthar, and More

Weird how Friday has turned into my most productive day of each week.

Candlesmass has announced a small handful of dates on the West Coast next March, starting in Seattle and working their way down to San Diego. Here’s the full schedule.
French avant-garde metal outfit Hypno5e are releasing Sheol on February 24 through Pelagic Records, and today they’re streaming a new track over at Metal Injection titled “Sheol Part II”.
Canadian epic metallers Gatekeeper (yes, I read that as Gatecreeper the first time too) are releasing From Western Shores on March 24 through Cruz Del Sur Music, and today they unveiled the first single in “Exiled King”.
Dead Soul Alliance have set February 17 as the release date for Spiralling to Lunacy. That will be available through Cryptorium9, and you can hear “Products of Pain” right now at this location.
Blackened death metal trio Ulthar are releasing not one, but two new full-lengths on February 17. Anthronomicon and Helionomicon will be out through 20 Buck Spin, and you can hear “Astranumeral Octave Chants” below. That’s the fifth track on Anthronomicon, in case you were wondering.
