CANTO: Insect Ark, Wage War, Apes, and More

Quieter day in the inbox, and I’m not mad at that situation.

  • Blackened grindcore sounds like a good enough thing to start with. Apes will unveil their latest full-length on June 14 through Secret Swarm Records, titled Penitence. Give the video for “Coffin” a watch here.
  • Out of Debemur Morti, Insect Ark (the project featuring Dana Schechter of Swans and Tim Wyskida of Khanate) have set June 7 as the release date for “Raw Blood Singing”. Give “Youth Body Swayed” a listen here.
  • Some psych rock sounds good for today as well. The Sonic Dawn revealed their new single “Pan Am”. That’s taken from their upcoming fifth album, Phantom, which gets here on May 10 through Heavy Psych Sounds.
  • Slim Cessna’s Auto Club performed at FITM, so they get a shoutout. A new LP, Kinnery of Lupercalia: Buell Legion, arrives on may 31 through SCAC Unincoporated. We’ll keep eyes and ears open for new tunes to come.
  • And we’ll close out with the new video from Wage War for “Magnetic”. They’re co-headlining a North American run, joined by Nothing More as well as Veil of Maya and Sleep Theory, kicking off next month.

So, we’re back again. How was the week? Busy here and at one point I actually got to see the sun for once — made me happy. What’s got you excited this week? Nothing? Well, this week’s list of new metal is longer than the line waiting on summer vacation and hopefully this will lift the spirits. Leading us off this week is grindcore phenoms WAKE with their latest bunch of brutal, Misery Rites. Next up is Dead Empires who added a singer and managed to make their best hardcore / heavy as balls album yet with Designed to Disappear. Rolling on is Insect Ark with their stunning and unique horror soundtrackish / doom metal on Marrow Hymns and closing out the top spots is Huntsmen with American Scrap, an album that really surprised me with how it combines King Dude’s type of dark americana with razor sharp doom metal — trust me, this thing just works. There you have it, the intro is done but we are FAR from finished so keep reading, keep clicking and keep discovering. Continue reading
