Fall is officially upon us and October will begin tomorrow. Who’s excited? ME. And you, of course. No surprise there and no surprise either that many of you are still reeling from the new Opeth album that dropped last week. Well, guess what? We’ve got another list of new stuff for you to get lost in and argue over. All killer, no filler. GO…

Exhumed kick off the witching season with their ninth album and it’s a freaking beast with punishing body blows and feral fangs that rip and tear. Seriously, it’s been quite some time since they’ve sounded this vicious so go and do that, pronto. Another thing to add to the “do now” list is the eighth effort from Insomnium, just when you think a band couldn’t get any better, they do, and they did. Likewise for Ripper’s newest 20 minutes of mind melting thrash – anyone remember how devastating Experiment of Existence was? This one multiplies it many times over. Last up top is Obsidian Tongue’s first utterance in six years and it’s their most affecting and astounding work of black/atmospheric/post/gaze metal to date. Knowing their discography, I’m even shocked I just wrote that, just trust me here. So really, these top slots are all can’t miss albums and start yet another STRONG week. But, there’s so much more and it’s a smorgasbord of gory delights. Continue reading

Creeping Death

Expect Halloween talk here for a bit, just FYI. Between Chris kicking off this year’s Hooptober, 3 From Hell, and AHS 1984 starting, the season is off to a killer start (see what I did there?). Those things are all great and as a bonus we’ve got, what might be, the longest list of new metal thus far so let’s jump right in…

Everything’s bigger in Texas, is what they say, and Creeping Death prove it on their full length debut of cracking death metal – don’t miss it folks, just don’t. Opeth return with their next prog filled opus and honestly some old Opeth creeps in but without a doubt, it’s another great album and I can’t wait to see all the “I’M MAD STILL” happen – wait for it…. You want psych metal that’s as retro as it is exceptionally great? The Neptune Power Federation definitely have you covered there and no they’re not a throwback rasslin’ group for those of you with questions. Last up top is everyone’s favorite sludgers, Fister, who cover classic metal tracks in their own wretched way. And it’s fantastic, so get on that.

Start bingeing bloody horror and vile death metal, ‘tis the season. Continue reading

Exhorder
Exhorder

It’s fully warranted, at this point, to have the fall and Halloween stuff out in stores but I’m already seeing the xmas stuff out in full force. Seriously. I mean look, I get it, santa is a heck of a money maker but pump the brakes on everything except Halloween, just for now. Thanks. Anyway, we’ve got yet another great list of new metal this week so let’s dig in…

Exhorder return with a KILLER slab of melodic thrash and it’s so freaking good after 27 years of silence, it’s aggressive and in your face – welcome back! Cult of Luna push the limits of post metal on their seventh full length, Engulf offer up another EP of wicked good extreme death metal plus a guest spot from a certain member of Vitriol doesn’t hurt (mile wide grin for me), and Monolord slow it down a bit as well as trim a hair or two off their fuzz to make their Relapse Records debut a doom outing to remember. TONS more await…go do the thing.  Continue reading

Crypt Sermon
Crypt Sermon

Honestly, I’m still reeling over the 1-2 punch of Vitriol and Mizmor from last week. And probably will be for some time to come. But, there’s a whole load of killer releases this week so my, and your, listening habits will be crowded and our wallets will be empty. ‘What is this sorcery?’ you ask…well, keep reading dear readers.

When a doom leaning heavy metal band comes out with a debut so impressive it makes waves everywhere, it’s hard to assume their follow up will live up to that hype but Crypt Sermon‘s more than lives up, it surpasses and crushes. Nightfell perfectly capture the darkness and turmoil of current times on their wickedly bleak third album, yet another crusher. I’ve seen Haunter‘s new outing called ‘current day old Opeth’ and that’s a fair assessment but misses a ton of the whipping black metal and visionary songwriting so please go and assess for yourself. Last up top but certainly not least is new stuff from death metallers Baest and if you thought they might soften a bit – WRONG. There you have it, four you need and way more of that below so hop to it. Continue reading

Vitriol
Vitriol

Last week was a week. Stuff happened or didn’t, things fell apart or didn’t, story of our lives. But, stuff is happening right here with new metal and we’ve a lot to cover so let’s do that.

On the heels of a debut that I said “has the power to split the extreme death metal genre wide open,” Vitriol is back with their debut full length and trust me when I say that the future of extreme death metal is in great hands. For all the well-earned coverage and pieces on Mizmor over the last few years, this week’s new offering might just be their best yet – syrupy black metal and emotionally draining doom combine to perfection here. Lochness burst onto the heavy as lead doom yet fuzzy and psychedelic scene with their debut 4-track EP and it’s a banger, be sure to get on that asap. Sewing up the top slots this week is Vokonis who are yet another band this week releasing their best effort to date, progressive and psychedelic rub shoulders with forward looking doom and heavy metal and it’s a sweet, sweet sound. So, the only thing left to do is get in there and grab some of this week’s blazing inferno. Continue reading
