He saw the light flash like a child’s sparkler on the 4th of July. It registered for an instant, then faded in the roar of the explosion reverberating in the open air. There was an odor that he couldn’t identify by name (it was cordite, not really used in gunpowder mixtures since the end of WWII) but instinctually knew. All of this happened in the space between synapses before his body acknowledged the impact of the bullet that – according to the laws of physics – he should have noticed before the sound of the revolver, or indeed the smell. As he dropped to the ground, consciousness slowly fading into the ether he had one solitary, lonely thought:

“What’s going to kick off the 275th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist?”

“The title track from the new Night Demon album,” a voice we only hear at the end of our life’s thread replied.

What’s the rest of the staff listening to? How about Boris, new Frozen Soul, Sortilege, Noxium Ferus, Lunar Chamber, Hideous Divinity, Paraphilia, Úlfúð and Afsky, not to mention the “correct” mix of a classic Megadeth song. There’s also tracks from Midwife & Vyva Melinkolya, Catherine Wheel, Mrs. Piss, old school love with Exodus and Exumer, a brutal throwback to Death Grips and much more.

New week. New tunes. Even though Monday’s don’t mean all this is out and ready for consumption, it does mean you get a front row seat for a ton of preorders. So, be thankful. Or not, the choice is yours. We’ll keep plastering them here every week and you do as you will. This week’s batch features Night Goat front and center and I’m telling you now, if you’ve never caught this band live you are missing out so at least do yourself a favor and grab their new slab of death rock, thank us later. Moving on we’ve got heavy metal from Night Demon (seems like we’ve been anticipating this thing forever…just me?), post-black metal from Downfall of Gaia, and a healthy mixture of black and death metal from Úlfúð. That’s a heavy hitting top four, but there’s a ton more hiding out below so happy hunting and we’ll see you here throughout the week.

CANTO: Night Demon, Heidevolk, Chrome Waves, and More

I was recently tipped off to this band called Winter’s Gate, and my life has been better for it ever since.

Entheos is dropping Time Will Take Us All on March 3 through Metal Blade, and today they revealed a performance video for “Darkest Day”. That footage is from a show in Knoxville last December.
Pagan folk metallers Heidevolk are only a day away from the release of Wederkeer, which will be available tomorrow through Napalm Records. To get us ready, they released a lyric video for the final album single, “De Strijd Duurt Voort”. Give that one a watch here.
Post-black metal collective Chrome Waves released the second single from Earth Will Shed Its Skin, with a music video, titled “The Nail”. That album drops on April 28 through M-Theory Audio.
Blindfolded and Led to the Woods are releasing their fourth studio album on May 19 through Prosthetic Records, titled Rejecting Obliteration. Check out the video for lead single, “Methlehem”, right here.
We’ll close out with the latest from Night Demon. With Outsider set for a March 17 release through Century Media, they unveiled a new single titled “Escape From Beyond”. Check out the accompanying music video below.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 266 (1.14.2023)

The beginning of the year always rekindles the flame of metal for me. Excitement for what’s coming, for what already has been comes faster, easier. I’m still going through the latest CD and vinyl acquisitions and it’s been pretty much non-stop Celtic Frost (seriously that Danse Macabre box set is killer), Wayfarer, and – thanks to Fearless Editor™ Josh – the new Misþyrming, so let’s kick off the 266th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with what you can hear if you pass by my place right now.

As per usual the rest of the gang has plenty of the tunes pouring through their speakers for you to get down to (in a total, like, metal way of course). So let music from the likes of Sanhedrin, Black Magnet, Ulthar, Days of Desolation, Moonlight Sorcery, Inherits the Void, Periphery, Night Demon, Sanguisugabogg as well as cuts from Nile, Rotten Sound, Big Black, and a small tribute to guitar legend Jeff Beck (RIP) take you away for the week.

CANTO: Trivium, Bizarrekult, Grave Pleasures, and More

Another early draft because it’s Friday and I want to hit the bottle as soon as possible. Is that bad?

We mentioned that Trivium and Heaven Shall Burn 7″ split earlier, so let’s build off that a bit. Trivium released a cover of Heaven Shall Burn’s “Implore the Darken Sky”, which you can stream here.
Night Demon are returning with their third full-length album on March 17th. Outsider will be released through Century Media, and a music video for the title-track can be seen here.
Next, we’ll pivot to some black metal. Give the new video for “Den Tapte Krigen” from Bizarrekult a watch here. That’s the title-track from the new album, which is set for a January 27th release through Season of Mist, their debut with the label.
One more out of Century Media. Grave Pleasures have set April 21st as the release date for Plagueboys, their third full-length effort. For a preview, give “Society of Spectres” a listen here.
Ville Valo shared a video for “Neon Noir”, which you can check out below. That, of course, is the title-track from his debut solo album, which is officially out today through Heartagram Records.
