Missed Connections: Looking Back on 2022

Best of 2022

Writing this list in particular is always one of my favorite points in the year.  It’s the time where I get to look at everyone else’s list and go “hey, I should have included that too!”, and it gives me a chance to go back and look at all the stuff that I have missed out on listening to in favor of obligations, lack of time, lack of brainpower, or simply not being able to turn off Origins like I know I need to.  It’s always good to take one last look back on everything before we properly usher in the new year and new releases with it, so let’s jump into some of the things that I am currently kicking myself for not giving more attention to.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 268 (1.28.2023)

Chris is away doing metal things…I don’t really know that, but let’s assume he’s out slaying demons with his battle vest on and blaring the latest singles from Metallica, yea man…that’s what he’s up to. Anyway, so you got me for this, the 268th edition of our mixtape playlist of things we’ve been playing way too loud this week and things we’ve been excessively talking about around our water cooler. I’ve been head over heads with the new Malleus and Colin has been the same about Enslaved, so we’ll kick this thing off there.

After that it’s a treasure trove of new and old favorites featuring Forcefed Horsehead, Tribulation, Majesties, Krallice, Celtic Frost, Ripped To Shreds, Ghost with Def Leppard, Hellripper, Mazzy Star, a twofer of Brutus, and many more. You know what to do at this point.

And, just so you don’t miss Chris too much, in his words: “Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week…”

Are we all knee deep in our 31 days of horror? Of course we are (just nod and carry on). On that; for those unaware, our man Chris is knee deep in his Blood Red column so be sure to keep up with that. Alrighty then, new metal and we got it yet again this week. We kick things off with a nasty speed demon from Daeva, a wicked deathcore outing from Lorna Shore, ripping death metal from both Ripped To Shreds and Catalyst, as well as many more in the list that follows. And yes, it’s another stellar week for new releases so dive in, turn up, and get some. We’ll see you here throughout the week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 252 (10.8.2022)

The weather’s turning colder, which means it’s time to wear a sweater…and jump into some extremity. Let’s not mince words and instead jump right into the 252nd edition of the Nine Circles Playlist.

We’re starting with new music from Ritual Dictates and Blind Illusion, and the the crew takes over with new Ingested, Ripped to Shreds and Mord’A’Stigmata. We also turn the volume down a bit with Touche Amore and Lantlôs before ramping it back up with Glassing and a whole bunch more.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

Chris

Premiere: Houkago Grind Time — “It’s Time to M-M-M-Mince”

In case you needed something vicious to get through the rest of your day, we’re here with the exclusive premiere of the latest from Houkago Grind Time, titled “It’s Time to M-M-M-Mince.” Houkago Grind Time 2: The Second Raid, the new album from the mincecore/goregrind project stemming from the mind of Andrew Lee (Ripped To Shreds, Skullsmasher), drops on November 4th and we’re proud to share the opening track here. Take a minute and give it a listen directly below. And since it’s goregrind, you know I mean that quite literally. Enjoy!
