The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 62 (01.12.2019)

playlist - mixtape

I’m baaaaaaaack.  Thanks to Josh for covering for me while I was away.  I spent a great two weeks back in the icy winter of my home, Chicago, IL.  I got to spend the holidays with all my family, catch up with some old friends from high school and college, eat and drink myself into oblivion, and watch my California-Born-and-Raised partner’s face light up when some unexpected snow flurries blew in.  It was exactly the kind of recharge I needed after the trash fire that was 2018.  I feel ready to get back in the saddle again, and what better way to do that than share all the good stuff I and my cohorts have been jamming over our respective holiday-time adventures?  Check below for a list of tunes to whip your year into shape.

Best of 2018: Corey’s List

EOY 2018 Header 9C

Ah, yes. Here we are again. Yet another journey around the sun has given us reason to pause and reflect on how lucky we are to have, almost literally, an indefinite source of music and art to appreciate at any moment in time. In this case, the musical form known as heavy metal. Yes, even in our very defined place in the artistic world, there is an unending wave of inspired music that we endlessly celebrate, together, across the globe. Except… wait, metal internet is basically the worst and ruins everything, doesn’t it? Nevermind. Continue reading

EOY 2018 Header 9C

I had a plan in January. The same plan I have every January: to only document the albums that strike a major chord in one way or another. Yet, here we sit in December and I’m debating on at least one or two of my locked list and mourning those who fell off. Don’t take ‘fell off’ as a knock either. It simply means there was no shortage of amazing albums this year and well, I just enjoy the torture of whittling away on my favorites (not).

I’ve spoken at length about how important music is for life in general and how important it is for me as someone that had a finger on the play button for nearly all 8,760 hours that made up this year. EOY lists, I love them – always have and always will. It’s a chance to purge all the best and move on to yet another cycle into the unknown. Fire walk with me through the albums that hit home the hardest… Continue reading

Yea, I know it’s been almost a month since we had one of these. Things happened, blah blah. Anyway, this here playlist is back – at least for this week. A lot has happened since the last one, a lot has been released and we’ve had our ears on a lot of stuff. Some of which we’re sharing with you directly below. I mean, we always talk music around the water cooler anyway so why not share, right? Right. And yes, we give you The Ocean right off the bat, album is FINALLY out this week – score. You came here for the tunes and not the talk so, shall we…

Concert Review: Maryland Deathfest XV, Part Two

To me, Friday felt like the first real day of this year’s Maryland Deathfest. (No disrespect to Thursday’s performers at all; I just only saw three of them, so for my personal experience, it felt more like a prologue of sorts.) For the first time — absent the opportunity for parking lot hangs, crushed beer-can BBQing and other outdoor shenanigans — it’d be all metal straight through, from the late afternoon to the earliest part of the morning. Let’s get to it! Continue reading
