They say “third time’s the charm” but we here at Nine Circles believe for Temple of Void, the fourth time’s the charm on Summoning the Slayer. The band is death doom at its core and has been extremely good at it since forming in 2013, but for Summoning… they bring out the ghosts of heavy metal, worship at the altar of the almighty riff, and truly find their calling in the world of extreme sounds. Buke recently sat down with guitarist Alex Awn to discuss the new album and how it came to be, they also discussed album art, working with the highly esteemed Arthur Rizk, the untimely passing of Trevor Strnad, playing Warhammer, and tons more. We now bring you this conversation in its entirety so grab your beverage of choice, a seat, and enjoy.

Initial Descent: May 29 – June 4, 2022
“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.” No need to expound on how real that quote is today. Leaving that to simmer… New metal time and we got another loaded list for your ear holes that kicks off with somewhat of a shift from Temple of Void and no they haven’t gone pop on us, they just built a way better death doom hot rod, Origin pops their head up to remind us that their tech death is still good tech death, Artificial Brain mops the floor up in the avantgarde and wildly experimental death metal chasm, Astronoid gaze it up once again much to the delight of several staffers here, and, of course, many others that will tickle your inner metal kid. Happy hunting and see you here throughout the week.

As we slip further into the abyss, I fully believe metal will be the savior to it all. Obviously not but it will give us all a good soundtrack to keep us occupied. Oh, by the way, GOOD JOB last Friday hitting Bandcamp in droves and helping artists, do that more. Really, a lot more. And on that note, there’s a ton of stuff to throw money at this week starting with the always razor sharp grind of Wake but on this new one they have bested all their back catalog, Angerot brings some serious death and black metal on their sophomore effort, Temple of Void show how true, heavy doom is done, and Demonic Death Judge reek havoc in the sludge / stoner arena. See? Plenty of hits already and there’s TONS more below so get to it. Stay safe and well, friends. Continue reading
Album Review: Temple of Void – “Lords of Death”
There’s more to the death/doom hybrid than just slowing your roll every once in a while. Taking that level of ferociousness and consistently landing in the pocket of groove (which I envision as being made of leather and studded, and capable of holding multiple invisible oranges) is essntial. It’s something bands like High on Fire excel at, being able to stay loose and dirty even as guitars, bass, and drums lock seamlessly to pummel you to the ground, and with their second album Lords of Death it’s safe to say Temple of Void are on their way to those same hallowed heights.
