Yes, that title is a Dark Souls reference, and it’s a title I would like to have some day.

Anyway, it’s that time of year where we all just want to enjoy the last vestiges of holidays before the new year begins and we all decide to make lists. Whether it is for presents, things to throw out, or just a general shopping list for Christmas, we are bound to make one.

However, here in the hallowed halls of 9C, we are making one better: It’s time for EOY list season!

2018 was an impressive year for music in general. The sheer amount of releases this year was mind-blowing – so much so that I decided to make it into a top 20. That’s right: I expanded my list because 10 ain’t gonna cut it. However, there were a lot of albums left out from this list because they weren’t being as heavily played as they were supposed to be or they came out too late for me to actually put on this list (sorry Within Temptation!). I also decided to cut EPs from this list, as they deserve their own separate thing that won’t be explored until I have some more time. Let’s get started… Continue reading →

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 50 (8.11.2018)

Before you start reading look up. See that image up there? When I see a cassette I think of mixtapes and maaaaan, I used to love making those. But even better was receiving them through snail mail from other folks with like minded music interests. Cassettes have made a comeback but in this digital age, those tape trading days are sadly behind us. Playlists have essentially taken their place and as of today Nine Circles has brought you fifty of them. To celebrate this 50th volume, we figured we’d spruce it up a bit. Hope you dig it, I know I do. Anyway, we’ve got another great bunch of tunes to share that left a mark over the past few days, dig in below. And HEY, share your own picks in the comments section or share some that might have made it onto your personal mixtape back in the day.

Premiere: The Ever Living – “New Mutiny”

The Ever Living - Herephemine

The Ever Living — a band that’s been coined with sharing headspace with the likes of Cult of Luna and Isis — will be releasing their debut full length Herephemine on May 4 via Chromism Records. That may still be nearly a month away, but today Nine Circles is excited to premiere the album’s second track, “New Mutiny,” to get you ready for what’s to come.

Dense atmospheres and exceedingly beautiful soundscapes pepper the hour-plus journey here. The London based band garnered many of this album’s themes and ideas while traveling abroad — excess through technology and other means takes on a whole new feel while submersing yourself in the juxtaposing melody and dissonance found throughout Herephemine. A form of post-metal perhaps, but they don’t place themselves within that genre so simply. The album as a whole feels like a sonic exploration of the cinematic kind similar to rock’s early visionaries who were looking for something different and unique.
